Description Have another sketchdump! I'm on a roll! I suddenly felt the need to draw my character Jullius. A lot. He's a stoat, aka an ermine, aka a short-tailed weasel (mustela erminea). He's just so much fun to draw, like a little ball of energy and emotions, he's very, very expressive. He also thinks he's much stronger and bigger than he actually is xD Stoats like Julius have very flexible bodies, which is great fun. Plus, I just adore these animals

These are drawn in October in my yellow-paged sketchbook, hence the yellow colour, that's the paper's colour! I enjoy sketching most, I have plenty of other sketches of my other characters too. The blue is the pencil I used to sketch with, then I outline with grey.

Art and character is © to me,
Please do not use! I didn't put a visible watermark on the sketches in order not to ruin them, please, don't make me do that.

Can you do a tutorial ? How you draw stoats. Or a step by step. Do you start with a circle ? I have many problems with Stoats.

Umm, I have considered doing this but I have so many other things I need to do first. Maybe later, but don't pin me down on it, sorry! There used to be a decent tutorial on how to draw them on DA, but I can't find it any more... But yes, I do start out with circles: one for the skull, one for the ribcage and another for the hips, with a line representing the spine. I usually go from there

Now that I think of it, there was a book called "drawing wildlife" by J.C. Amberlyn (I thin kthat's how it's spelled) which had a part about weasels that was pretty good. I recommend looking into that one

Can I use one of the poses for an avatar? Not on deviantart, though. I'll credit you if you like.

What exactly do you mean by 'avatar'? I don't mind you using my sketches for reference (though be aware that they are stylized and contain anatomy mistakes/exaggerations) but I'd rather not have them completely copied. I can't copyright a pose, and I don't intend to, just make sure that the art you come up with is noticably different from mine I'd like to see the result, and credit would be nice

I have missed Julius. Stoats are among my top favourite mustelids, so it's always nice to get to ''meet'' other stoat characters. Hoping to see more of him, of course!

You have my full agreement on weasels (and martens) being fun to draw, with their frenetic energy and apparently ''spineless'' flexibility. They make ultimate cartoon characters.
It's like they ''speak'' to you when you have grown familiar with how they move and act; one thing is playing and having fun with their expressive bodies, but my musties have completely taken over my story writing; they do so much action- they are giving me quite a challenge when it comes to visualization. It's like they crave to be moved around all the time- in the craziest ways possible. My current comic screams ''animation'', but I currently don't have the skill level needed for something like that.

Glad others are feeling the same way about them!

Avanii In reply to Han-Wik [2011-11-25 11:01:36 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you're happy to see him I have more sketches of him and Sibirica as well, and I'm working on some coloured pics of those two so more mustelids are coming up

They're so cartoony indeed! Which is why I gave Julius a very emotional and expressive personality, so I have an excuse to draw his exaggerated expressions! They speak with their entire bodies and that is so much fun to experiment with! It would be really cool to see some animated musties indeed! It's a pity it's so hard to find good reference material when it comes to their running, jumping and other actions, there are no slow motion videos like the ones you can find of dogs and horses (like this [link] ). Should you ever come across such videos, please please let me know

Indeed, it seems there are more mustelid-fans out here than I initially expected!

I do know what a sloth is, but Julius is about as far away from a sloth as you can get Stoats are really different, extremely energetic and fast!
