Hmm, I know what you mean. I went through a stage where I could draw hands cool all by themselves, and putting it on the person would make the hand look like elephant toes or baby hands. D:

Not sure how to get around that though, maybe try using body references? I look at posemaniacs.com every now and again to help me out when I'm in a fix.

How do you determine how long the innitial torso line (or the torso itself, up to the neck) should be? Mine kept coming out like tubes. Also, the breasts?

As I stated before, the length of a torso is about half the length of the leg. If they end up looking too lanky, then adding more body to them (like getting more bulky) usually eliminates it.
For males, creating a more blatant upside-down trapezoid for their upper body for wider shoulders helps, or making it smoother for females does too.
If that doesn't work out, then either the head or limbs are drawn too small to be proportionate to the body. Either or, if the torso or legs appear too long, then maybe they were just drawn a bit long.

So in the case that the torso is too long, fix the head to be proportional to it, or widen the shoulders. Thank you! ^^

With the breasts, they keep coming out too small (not like shrinking cup sizes) or too low. Or too high. So size, and placement.

Yeah, that was usually my problem before and ended up with people with shorter legs >_< You're welcome !

For breasts, it depends on the torso.
From the length of the torso, find the midpoint of the torso and cut it horizontally. In the middle of that area, is where the breasts start (starting from nipples). It's not that different from a man's pectoral area, just structured a bit differently since the female torso is usually smaller.
Size wise, I'm not that sure of. I usually just go with the flow. Just keep in mind that there is a space allowance where the clavicle notch is. It's a small space. Then the boobs are there. :T

Hi! Here's how far I've come along since last time.

This is the first full-body character I've fully drawn. The hands are a little small, and the feet lack detail, though. I also kept it a bit cartoon-y.

This one I finished today. Very happy with how it came out. I went directly back to this tutorial for the hands, specifically the fingers. Kept her head and face super-simple to match up with the stick figure next to her. I still messed up a bit on the eyes, though.
