Description Now this isn't my first attempt at doing a re-design of Heavily Armed Porky from the cult classic SNES game Earthbound. This beastly machine went through a number of iterations before I finally found a design that I really enjoyed.

The process for this went a little like this. First, I drew out my own sketches of the original design to get a feel for it. I then looked at Porky's personality to get an idea of how I may recreate the spider mech. For those who don't know, Porky is an extremely spoiled brat and lives next door to Ness, the main character of the game. And one of the important but underlying features of his character is that he comes from a broken home. For anyone who has played Mother 3, they know that any area that is supposed to act as a home to Porky strongly resembles a child's room and is full of kid's toys. And that lead to the original set of sketches for Heavily Armed Porky. Back then, his mech looked like a bizarre amalgamation of kid's toys like jack-in-the-boxes, train sets, cars, and tinker toys all "glued" together with a nasty purple colored silly putty. Unfortunately, I'm still relatively new to creating in 3D, so that would have been too complicated at this point.

Seeing as how Porky began to hang out with aliens and other bizarre creatures, I turned to space for inspiration. The Lunar Lander, which has a slightly insect like appearance, was the first thing I looked at. But that felt like it was a bit too bulky. And it hit me, UFOs are more sleek and could be the perfect base to start from. While saucer shaped UFOs are the most common among the classic of those interstellar vehicles, there are others. Those include "cigars" and triangular shaped objects. The triangle seemed like a good option until I started adding legs to it. But then I made a subtle change to the shape and made it into a diamond, and it just felt right.

Once the shape was figured out, I did a few quick sketches and went straight into a more finished looking painting. I was pretty pleased with how it turned out, but I wound up making a few changes to it after I showed this image to my teacher. The biggest change involved the cockpit. Instead of being so bulgy, it became much more streamlined and helped give the mech a bit of more fierce appearance, similar to how a newer Mustang looks.
