"Could you help me take a look at something?" I pulled my notebook back out and flipped to the page where I had scrawled out what I remembered from Mother's own notebook, and turned it towards Celeste. I'd only copied down the words and the complex pattern that I'd found, not the strange hand and the sketch of Celeste, mainly because my drawing skills were non-existent (and besides, I could never forget them anyway)... so Celeste probably couldn't figure out that they were relating to her specifically. They did say two heads were better than one after all… and maybe Celeste's perceptiveness would help me here.
"Um… Celeste? Celeste??" But instead of scribbling workings down or reading through all the notes, I found that her gaze was fixed on a specific part of the page - the winding pattern that almost made me dizzy to look at it. "..............oh!" She blinked and seemed to catch herself, like someone who had been woken up from a nap they hadn't realized they'd fallen into. "I-I apologize, Mistress… I must be worn out from all the preparations for tomorrow." "Tomorrow… ah!!" I'd nearly forgotten about it entirely! It was Pri's fourteenth birthday tomorrow, and Celeste had been busying around the house all day preparing for the party…
"You should go rest then… sorry for keeping you up like this." "It's alright, Mistress." Celeste smiled and made a small bow before heading for the door. "I hope you rest well too." As the door clicked shut behind her I sighed, everything Sis had said that day rushing back into my mind. "Hah…" It really shouldn't have bothered me. If I'd heard just anyone say that I would be forgotten, discarded just like that I would have been easily able to dismiss them as just being jealous or spiteful, but this was Sis. I loved her unconditionally, and was absolutely sure of the fact that she loved me in return - after all, that's what family was supposed to do, right? And yet, Sis had never been the sort of person to lie, especially about something as important as this. And that made it hurt all the more.
I shut the notebook away in one of my desk drawers and lay back onto my bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. Four years ago… that was when I had began manifesting my magical powers, and Mother had taken an interest in me. And even though she barely spoke, if at all - I could probably count the total number of times she'd spoken to me all this time on my two hands - there was undeniably a part of me that wanted to impress her as much as I could.
Maybe that was what Sis had felt as well… before Mother had cut their lessons short so abruptly. And maybe that was what would happen to me tomorrow as well. Well, there was no use worrying about it before the day itself. I slowly dozed off, mind filled with all those messy, conflicted thoughts - and the image of that strange pattern Celeste had seemed so affected by.
