Description My submission for the fantasy creature pattern design contest at

I decided not to go the traditional fantasy creature route since I'd done enough dragons lately. I went with Greek mythology and chose the half bird half woman harpy as my subject. I was concerned about making her wings correctly but I think they turned out pretty nicely. Though they took a long time. A. Long. Time. I used wires to make her wings and legs posable and spruced her up with beaded necklace and belt. I'm very happy with how she turned out

This is marvelous!!! I see so much detail and love that you used wires, making it stand and sturdier. It is deffiantly what I would think the greeks would have made if they crocheted. (although theirs would defiantly be more nude haha greeks) I love the colors choices of the yarn. And the beaded necklace and belt are also a real great addition. You are fabulously creative

I have yet to find anyone do a good wing pattern, last night I finally sat down and designed one but the storm kept me from being able to get online to post it until today. I finally was able to get online and saw this awesome piece Mine is just a first attempt but yours looks awesome! I like the two layering of the feathers, mine just has one for now. Are yours poseable?

This is the first time I've ever done a feathered wing too. I looked at pictures for real bird wings and tutorials for drawing bird wings to see where all the different types of feathers go. I made each of the larger feathers individually (the primaries, secondaries and tertials), the second layer of coverts were made all in one piece. It took a long time to assemble. The wings are posable since I crocheted them around wires.

I looked at a lot of photos to try to get it close. I have dial up internet still so I couldn't look at any videos of the wings opening and closing. I really like how you layered them and that the longer ones are thicker also.
OOOOHHHHH that is genius. I've seen a flower pattern that you crochet around wires. It turned out quite well. That is awesome because it doesn't make it extra bulky like it you had wired each piece. I crocheted a base and then did chains for feathers. It worked pretty good but I made the base too thick and now it doesn't fold like it did when I first started. Can all of your feathers stack on top of each other when folded?

To get the shape I wanted, I actually had to sew the 4 feathers at the tip together so the have to fold as one piece. All the other feathers are only attached at the root so they can kind of layer when the wing folds. It would probably work better with stiffer yarn so that each feather did not flop around as much. I didn't add the coverts on the back of the wings so it doesn't look as good folded though. I tried taking a picture with the wings folded but my crappy photography skills got in the way....

Mine layer like yours do. I wish they could fold as one piece like your 4 tip feathers. I tried to make mine all in one piece so they could be made faster (since I take forever!). I have that problem too with the thin and soft yarns. Try using Red Heart. It may not be as soft as the ones I like but it is good at holding its shape when you crochet tightly.
I had looked and looked for anyone who made wings like I had wanted. Until I posted the ones I had made I still hadn't found anyone else who had made any. It is kind of awesome that you have a set too. It is exciting. If I had found yours before I tried I may have been begging to try your design. High five for crochet!

The wings are incredible!
How did you make them? I haven't found a single good pattern for wings!

Thank you The wings aren't so much of a crocheting pattern as a painstakingly long assembly process. Each feather is basically a chain that you crochet around with and you just make different length chains for each type of feather. The coverts are made by repeatedly chaining and crocheting up the chain.
