What can run but never walks, often murmurs, never talks, has a mouth but never eats, has a bed but never sleeps?

Message carriers, warriors, lab experiments. These beasts were the lowest of the low, the first to be sent in to unknown areas to tread upon land mines and get cut down by enemy fire. If they got to be message carriers they were the lucky ones, swift footed beasts they had unbelievable endurance.
Occasionally they would escape.. to wander the land with no purpose. Sightings were rare. Occasionally towns members would be killed by these beasts who had lost their touch of loyalty. Most, however, still bore the workings and gear of their human captors. May they be lights to guide their way at night to tattoos or brands to signify ownership and right to their duties. Fiercely loyal even to the death they were similar to dogs, sadly their size and appearance made them more useful in other ways than keeping company and guarding houses.

Outfitted with a carrier harness this beast was lucky enough to be sent to deliver parcels and letters along a set route. Often the beasts would run day and night until they reached their destination, only to stop briefly (hopefully the receiver was kind enough to offer water) and make their way back. He must have been set free a long time ago by a kind soul. In good shape he roams the swamps and dense brush, often getting plants and vines tangled in his tall spines. Their intelligence is undeniable. Why they were so cooperative and loyal was the question.
