~“Hello,” whispered the light eagerly, “who are you?”

The shadow did not respond.

“…will you be my friend?”~

~For a shadow to be born and thrive, the light must give up a part of itself to the darkness, and in return the shadow becomes a follower of the light. When the light sparkles with joy, the shadow is happily bright. When the light begins to dim, the shadow also fades. When the light dances, the shadow can’t help but follow along with every move, twisting and turning at the slightest motion.~

The first is an excerpt from my children's story on deviantart, and the second is from my fanfiction "Contrast" on fanfiction.net. (It's actually filed under DNAngel, though )

So, the picture...>.> My word, I drew this ages ago...
I'm pretty proud of it, all things considered...tried to do some decent pencil-only shading...although not much, obviously...Yugi's not shaded at all, since he IS the light source in the picture, and that seemed like it would be contrary. XD

I tried to give Yugi's outfit a very "free" feel to it, while Yami's is (obviously) more about being chained up, trapped...note various buckles, shackles, and one random padlock. (OH, and I'm pretty darn proud of that cape, too...used a bedsheet to figure out how to draw the folds.)
Basically, Yugi is the light in the picture, and by shedding light on the puzzle is casting a shadow, i.e. Yami. For those who know the show, I hope the symbolism and parallels in regards to the show are fairly clear. ^-^

My main speculation here, I guess, is that light creates shadows, and therefore a shadow's size, shape, movement, and existence are all controlled by the light. Hence, shadows are "bound" by the light and the object casting them. Rather like being chained to the half-existence of life in the puzzle, right? (<-- so proud of myself e.e)

Hope this looks okay, since we had trouble fitting my sketchbook in the scanner (ah! I forgot to mention I scanned this in at 's house!) and I couldn't do any real editing afterward.
