Description I've finally done my first dragon colo.... and it was ALOT of work... mostly because I had to work myself through alot of trial and error.

This little goldwing is my entry for s dragon contest. The lineart was done by Beast3
The task was to choose one of his beautiful Lineart drawings and colour it.

Wish me luck on the contest.... I could definately use a few months premium

A quick walkthrough my work in progress:

thank you so much. I've improved alot during the last two years. I keep seeing things on DA and thinking.. hey.. I wanna know how this is done. Than I just sit for hours reading tutorials and trying stuff... and usually I'm learning something in the progress I love to see art as a journey... there are still endless places to discover

I love dragons too... I just don't generally do artworks with them cause I suck at dragon lineart. That's why that collab with beast3 made me so happy

very nicely done!
The wing membrane texture in particular is impressive

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AtelierKunz In reply to Denodon [2011-05-18 15:50:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanx. I like the wings aswell but they didn't take half as much time as doing all those scales....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Denodon In reply to AtelierKunz [2011-05-19 05:19:34 +0000 UTC]

hehe, well the membrane is a flat single surface at least. Scales are all individual with a slight curve

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AtelierKunz In reply to Denodon [2011-05-19 11:00:13 +0000 UTC]

yes thats why... my hand still aches from drawing scales... I did do some shading on the veins of the wing membrane too but it wasn't half as time consuming.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Denodon In reply to AtelierKunz [2011-05-19 11:05:56 +0000 UTC]

hehe, I know what you mean. I've done some experimentation with texturing before but I've found it incredibly tedious for the most part. The biggest thing I've done with it was my daluga re-make space art a while back.

wxenoxw [2011-05-18 11:00:27 +0000 UTC]

Erf ! It kills me to see how from this lineart you manged to create his skin and vein ! Great job.
But I don't understand... It is possible to import new brushes ? In wich soft ?
Anyway, good luck ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AtelierKunz In reply to wxenoxw [2011-05-18 11:16:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanx alot I've used photoshop CS4. You can import any brushes you like with this program

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wxenoxw In reply to AtelierKunz [2011-05-19 06:53:59 +0000 UTC]

Indeed I tried to import some brushes in CS5. Works great but... this is cheating ? xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AtelierKunz In reply to wxenoxw [2011-05-19 10:40:11 +0000 UTC]

Good that it works for you. Almost everybody uses brushes on their work... only most people wouldn't tell you. I think it's only fair to mention the sources and link back to the guys who made the brushes. The important thing is to use brushes in a creative way... not just stamp them on your picture - and I haven't seen a good picture made on brushes alone yet so... I don't think it's cheating XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wxenoxw In reply to AtelierKunz [2011-05-19 12:58:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I joked ^^ I understand, this is really an helpfull thing
But actually for the moment I would prefer to train myself to use the current brushes. And learn to use photoshop (in the drawing way, because I used to use as photo editor)

Do you know if there is any picture deplacements shortcuts in photoshop ? I mean like in paint tool Sai. There is something I love in sai is that you can rotate the picture with two key, this is really handy when you draw !

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AtelierKunz In reply to wxenoxw [2011-05-19 18:43:57 +0000 UTC]

You are right to train yourself with the standart brushes first. I dare say that most people who are really good did this before using brushes.... it's more time consuming without brushes but they could get into the same effects without cheating

I don't know if there is a shortcut... you'd probably better ask someone else who has done more digital art than me. What I generally do is click the move tool and check the "show the transform options" field. that allows you to turn your picture around anyway you like (you can even flip it over, scale it ect.)
good luck

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wxenoxw In reply to AtelierKunz [2011-05-20 10:33:22 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but, that tool actually move only the activated layer, don't move all the picutre... I think. It is the same than CTRL+T.
Anyway thanks you for the tip, I will use it this way. ^^

May I make appeal to your knowledge one last time ? XD
Do you know anything about texture ? It seems that some people use it also to paint. I guess it works with the perspective tool of photoshop ?
