i've been trying to do environs and designs like this for a while. any tips? how do you come up with them?

Hmm ... dunno . First try to get a feeling for perspective . Next just draw draw draw , imitate your idols ( but do not copy their work ) . Once you have a feeling for your tools , you can start worrying about composition .
