Description Commission for axelstripe featuring Twilight Sparkle as an Eohippus!

This was a conceptual commission, where I had to figure out how to turn Twilight into an Eohippus! So that meant different sketches and all, which you can see in the WIP linked down below.

That all resulted in what you can see above. For those unfamiliar with Eohippus, it's basically an ancient little horse. That's where the scale references comes in.

Great fun to try out different directions for her mane, body, tail, etc.

I really do love your commissioner's idea for Twilight Sparkle, plus you did a fantastic job bringing Twilight to life as an ancient ancestor of the horse family.

I hope that you have a great and blessed day/night!

Man, how would evolution even work in that universe? Are chimeras horizonal evolution? What even is a unicorn horn?

Also breezies, we haven't accounted for breezies.

I wanted to study prehistoric ancestors of horses and this is what I found. Why I'm not surprised that drawings like yours exist No offense, it's a good drawing good drawing *gives you a fave*. It just made me laugh so much when I found it while looking for interesting reconstructions.

Hey, how about making a series for this? About ponies evolution? Since they crawl out from sea (or something else) and start to separate into three similar but also different species. Also incorporate magic in their evolution!

Ohmygosh that is so adorabl~~
HAY WAIT, A UNICORN HORN?

So there were three "tribes" even back then?
If so, then how the Earth/Unicorn/Pegasus differentiation came to be preserved would be an interesting question for future pony geneticists.

I'm sorry if this sounds too picky, but an eohippus has 4 hoofed toes on the front feet, and then the 3 in the back like you have. Besides that small, technical detail that only someone that knows a bit about this species, I love this concept, and think that you did a beautiful job with this. I don't know about anypony else, but I would love to see the rest of the mane six like this. It would be really interesting to see how Rarity would turn out since they didn't really have curlers back then. Hats off to you

Stegoraptor In reply to scoutyscout99 [2015-01-09 01:39:48 +0000 UTC]

They were the first horses, and eohippus even means "dawn horse." and SlideSwitched is right, they lived when the great terror birds were around. They lived 50 million years ago, so they never truly saw dinosaurs, except for those terror birds. The dinosaurs that you are thinking of are probably small raptors or coelurosauria, which weren't quadripeds(none of the carniverous dinosaurs were quadripeds), so I'm not exactly sure what dinosaur your thinking of. I'm sorry about having such a long reply and if it gets to informative, cause if you can't tell from my username or my icon, I'm a huge fan on prehistoric animals Β  and so when I see a question about them, I just need to answer. Anyways, hope this helps
