Furies were terrifying monsters, creatures who pursued and punished those who broke the strictest taboos. The murder of a parent, the eating of another man's flesh, the desacration of a temple, all fell under their jurisdiction. They came in two forms.

The first were incarnated as women. The women, or Erinyes, were named. Alecto, the unceasing, Megeara, the grudging, and Tisiphone, the avenging. They were the embodiment of righteous vengeance, and they were as much respected as feared.

The second, and more horrifying incarnation, pursued it's victoms through dreams and visions. They had heads wreathed with serpents, their eyes dripped with blood, and their whole appearance was horrific and appalling. They had the wings of a bat, and the muzzle of a dog. They whipped their victoms with flailing tails, savaged them with talons, and finally, dragged their souls down into the deepest pits of the underworld.

The Furie's most famous exploits are recounted in the Orestiya, where they tormented Orestes for the murder of his mother Clymenestra.
