Description Kilchurn Castle stands majestically in the middle of Loch Awe, Western Scotland.

I hadto wait an age for the light to hit the castle, giving me only a few seconds to try and get the right exposure etc .....thats one of the things that makes me mad when I hear tourists say 'oh anyone can take a photograph!' They don't see all the preperation and waiting in boggy feilds you do

Anyway, this was shot about half an hour after Inveraray Castle (last upload0 , still very early in the morning with the low cloud and mist still lingering around the mountains.

I'm not a pro but I get annoyed at people who say "anyone can take a photo". I usually answer they never met my mother! Woman couldn't even get everyone in the shot at x-mas gatherings or left this huge gap above. I was always telling her to take a step back or forward to adjust the spacing...we had generic cameras. ...and that was when I was 13. Really wish I was able to learn more ...or even travel to get some shots.

Your photos really show the care you take to get that special image

I've seen so many take a snap, when if they had waited a bit they would have a wonderful picture. I sometimes help to remind them what they came for. They are usually grateful.

I live in Scotland (Isle of Mull) so I go past this place quite a few times a year on the way to Glasgow and England.I don't usually get time to actually take photographs though so I was very lucky that the light was also on my side

This is a fantastic shot Angie. The atmosphere is so powerful - it takes my breath away. It's brilliantly photographed too. Wonderful work as always.

Incidentally, I was thinking about buying the D400 camera, but I opted for the NIKON D40 instead. I should get it next week.

Hope you are well.

Take care,
Yan

Hi Yan

I'm very well thankyou, hope your the same? Good luck with your new camera, I'm still desperatly saving for better glass now I have a decent body! Happy experimenting

Good to hear from you Angie. I'm glad you're keeping well.

The new camera is fab. I've spent all week reading the manual and getting used to the controls. It's well designed, and a lot easier to work than I expected. I still haven't been out taking photos yet, but hope to soon.

I don't know how long you've had your Canon, but it's certainly produced many superb pictures. Lenses are so very expensive. I couldn't believe some of the prices. I hope you find the right one at an affordable price.

Do you ever need to use a tripod? I've always been meaning to ask.

Take care,
Yan

Hi Yan

Getting to know a new camera certainly seems daunting at first. I refer to the manual if I'm really stuck but otherwise I tend to learn by useing it and somhow I quickly start being able to intuit the settings rather than thinking it through technically.
I almost always use a tripod, especially as I like to shoot at dawn and dusk and at iso 100,so a tripod is usually a must.
I've had the Cannon since March but haven't paid for it yet! Warehouse express do a great pay in 9 months offer, otherwise I'd never save up enough money. Once I've paid the camera off I shall do the same again on a 10-20 sigma lens for some wide angle photography
The biggest thing about getting a proper DSLR is being able to buy a filter holder and experiment with ND grads, this is how I get the moody skies. I'm really enjoying trying to get effects at the camera end in the field rather than relying too much on photoshop 9though I love messing about with that too).

I hope your new camera gives you hours of enjoyment!

Bright Blessings

Angie*

Thanks for the advice Angie.

I've noticed other photographers talking about "ND Grads", but I don't actually know what they are. I do know about getting a UV filter to protect the lens. In saying that, I was looking at some COKIN ones and was surprised at the various different types of UV filters. I just want an all-purpose one.

This morning, I've been experimenting with combinations of shutter speed and aperture - trying to understand the relationship between the two. Luckily, I bought a cheap tripod a while back, so I fitted my Nikon to it, so I could use the manual settings.

Yes, I thought you might use a tripod - especially for low-light shooting conditions. I tend to stay awake all night, so I really want to get out when the city's quiet and take some shots of buildings and bridges, when they're all lit up.

Night photography is an area I do find interesting. It's difficult to get the camera settings right though. I'm a little confused about "ISO" settings. My D40 starts at ISO 200 up to 1600, but I can override these to as low as ISO 20 up to 6400.

Getting the balance correct between ISO, shutter speed, and aperture, will take a while to figure out. For now, I'll stick to "auto-mode" or use some of the "program modes".

I bought my camera from Amazon. They're doing a really good deal on this model at the moment. I bought a camera+accessories bag from that Warehouse Express site you mentioned. It's good that you were able to buy your Canon from them using monthly payments. I hope you get your new lens soon.

Wishing you well,
Yan
