What shiny gold thing? I didn't mean for anything to be gold, but I did overemphasize the bounce light a bit.

I know this might be inappropriate since its for your class but is that grass a texture or a brush? or a texture made into a brush... Its awe inspiring!

Artsammich In reply to steinlo [2011-05-29 22:45:02 +0000 UTC]

I think it's a macro picture of moss I used as an overlay. I thought it would make an interesting and different grass, and I was right.

What artist did you do this schoolism class under?

Artsammich In reply to righse [2011-03-10 05:45:02 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm teaching the class, if that's what you're asking.

righse In reply to Artsammich [2011-03-10 11:17:26 +0000 UTC]

I originally thought you were a student partaking in one of the schoolism classes, before I looked through your gallery and bothered to notice your full name, under your deviantart name, haha. My apologies!

No problem, I was just confused at the question.

haohaohayashi [2011-01-11 12:44:34 +0000 UTC]

did you paint this entirely or did you use photos as well?
the detail is astonishing

Artsammich In reply to haohaohayashi [2011-03-08 04:49:12 +0000 UTC]

It's a combination of the two. Photo overlays by themselves tend to look really bad, so they can save a bit of time but you still need to do a lot of painting to make it work. In fact this one still needs a bit more work.

haohaohayashi In reply to Artsammich [2011-03-11 17:31:48 +0000 UTC]

I'm looking through your work and I see you don't use it as often as some concept artists.
Would using excessive amount of photos detract from the animated/cartoony feel of the piece at times?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Artsammich In reply to haohaohayashi [2011-03-12 20:38:52 +0000 UTC]

I think photos can add a lot of interest to an otherwise dull scene---but once you've added it to something, you're committed and they have to integrate well. Having one thing in the image with a strict texture overlay and everything else brushy painted just won't work. I think it's also possible to overdo it. The end result is the key: if it's distracting from the piece it's wrong, and if it looks great and helps the piece it doesn't matter how photo-y it is.
