Description Ah, finally I'm posting some of my very own Edge Chronicles fan characters! It's certainly taken me long enough, and these aren't even the main characters!

As much as I love this particular book series, the constant stream of bad stuff happening to every single character rather gets to me. Rather a lot. Earlier this resulted in my drawing a bunch of comics wherein I went around rescuing people and changing things that really bugged me. My idea for a fanfic came from the desire to have a story in this continuity whose overall tone would be light instead of dark! No characters dying, losing their families, disappearing for 50 years, etc. This is not to say that there wouldn't be peril, it's just that they'd always get out of it somehow. You know, fun stuff!

My story takes place in the first age of Flight, at least starting out during the reign of Vilnix. The main characters are a married Fourthling couple named Quips and Apitica (Pit) Quillian. They own a small mail-barge, which gives me an excuse to send them anywhere I want to on the Edge. The three pictured up there are the crew, who aren't really necessary since the barge is extremely small, but who sort of forced themselves on the Quillians through various and strange circumstances.

The Shryke is mad.

I don't think I'd really found names for them yet, but they were going to be in my fanfic. The one with the mail-delivery couple. Things don't go as well as they had hoped at the Slave Market (of course!), and they end up accidentally staging a bit of a prison break. The Oakelf and the Slaughterer escape and come with them, and the Shryke...

The Slaughterer is a bit of a con man and thief you see, and before leaving the market he steals an unhatched Shryke egg. One of the special ones. Pit and Quips don't know of course, but then the egg starts to hatch on their ship so the Slaughterer can't keep it a secret. This is a disaster of course because baby Shrykes are very dangerous and must eat much food, but all they have is all their vegetables and maybe some dried meat in the (very small) cargo hold, so the hatchling eats everything they have until it is full. And because it has started its life not by eating bloody meat, it is not thirsty for blood. But, it is a little bit crazy because she could not get the necessary nutrients as a baby. So now they are raising a friendly but slightly crazy Shryke, who is possibly royalty as well because it was a special egg. This is not what Pit and Quips wanted when they started this quest!

Ahhhh, this is awesome. That slaughterer's so happy! I think I'm gonna read the books again, all the way through, in the right order this time. Your art always puts me in the mood to attempt Edge characters myself

Thanks! I'd really like to return to this story, I still enjoy the concept and I'm pretty happy with the first chapter. The problem is I've got ideas for a couple of things that happen to the characters, and how they meet and such, but not much of anything for an over-arcing plot or a climax of any kind.

Ooh, this sounds really cool. I love the names you picked for your characters, too.

It really does irritate me how there really aren't any Edge characters who get a happy ending, and so many of them deserve one. Well, maybe Xanth does, unless something horrible happens to him in the last book. And if it does, please don't tell me! He's my favorite, and I think I'd rather be ignorant of any terrible fate in store for him untill I finally get the book.

BAH! *dies*

You have no idea how much happier this has made me.
First off, your art is wonderful as usual: slaughterer hair = awesome, and is that a nightwaif? I haven't read them in a while.
I'm glad your story is in the first age of flight, the first two were the best. When you have written it, I shall be there to read it.

I'm also glad you're going for a lighter tone, because more than once I found myself wishing they'd cut the heroes some slack. Except with Twig because then he could be all heroic, yet Woobie-ish at the same time. *swoon*

Wow, such enthusiasm! Now I have to write it.

Yes. Yes you do.

I jape. The Edge could do with some merriment. I mean, what on earth was up with Quint and Maris after Clash of the Sky Galleons? Honestly!

Have just noticed the Shryke's eyebrows. They're like the Mad Hatter's in the new Tim Burton film. XD

Artoveli In reply to Capricorn-Star-15 [2010-01-09 01:35:34 +0000 UTC]

Maaan Shrykes are hard to draw! That's one of the reasons I've held back from drawing much about the adventures of my Edge characters. But now I have the entire Twig trilogy for picture references so I should be okay.

Ugh. Quint and Maris are a sore spot for all the fans.

Artoveli In reply to dragoncaretaker92 [2010-01-09 03:50:34 +0000 UTC]

Long and complicated is not a bad thing! But yes, it's a long, boring-looking wiki article.

Instead I'll just tell you. It's a series of books (11 of them) by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell, that take place in a fantasy world called The Edge. It's extremely imaginative and original, and they're full of these really fantastic illustrations. I've learned a lot from the art in those books. The writing itself is not high-art, but they're definitely page-turners.

Yes, I was so sad when i heard about the story of Twig who never got back to Maugin T_T
and it gets even worse after that.
Well, I guess, it's what gives the story it's characteristic but I sometimes wish they wouldn't torture their characters so much. At least the good always wins at the end of their books.

I know! I even read the description before

Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. The writing is not stellar (though it does improve throughout the series), but they're real page-turners, and the world building is fascinating. I learned a lot from the art in those books too.

Clearly we disagree, because I'd love the books to be darker I think Chris Riddell's art suits it more.

I admit there's a lot of evil stuff in them, but the chivalric hero always nobly triumphs which I find a bit annoying.

Anyway, I can't wait to see some Edge drawings!
