Description Still progressing with my attempts to figure out what China Miéville's Bas-Lag xenians look like. This here's a vodyanoi, with a little watercræft duck he's absently sculpting.

Again, I've posted this in traditional because most of the work (both in terms of how it looks, and the time it took) was just pencil on paper. I did do a bit more photoshop work on this than on the khepri, but since I worked so much harder on the pencils, that was kinda inevitable.

The downside to this is that I kinda topped myself a bit on this one - I'm gonna have to redo the khepri to match this work level (not a bad thing tho, since I've just re-read Perdido Street Station, so I know there are a few inaccuracies with my khepri design that I have to fix anyway), and the rest of the races will have to be up to this standard as well, or I just won't be satisfied. Gotta push yourself tho, right?

ps - this originally started just as a face-study, which is why his elbow disappears off the page. I was also originally gonna dress him in the traditional vodyanoi loincloth, but I figure a lot of New Crobuzon vodyanoi wear clothes crafted to work in water or on land (for the sake of decorum), so I worked up a costume. The ribbing material used for his vest is intended to prevent it looking too clingy on land. Oh, and I suck at water!

Great conceptualization of the vodyanoi! I pictured them as having tales like a tadpole. Not sure if it was ever stated that they had legs. Great work!

I'm currently reading Perdido Street Station. This is a really great take on what they look like. Great job!

Creepy! But in a good way. I like the spots on his legs and the way his face looks shiny.

I'd never really thought of the vodyanoi being creepy, but I guess they kinda are, out of context. ^_^

Thanks, man! I've actually got pages of notes & sketches for most of the major xenian races in MiΓ©ville's Bas-Lag books, so I intend to visit as many of them as I can, but I rarely have much time for drawing these days, so it takes me a while to get fun personal stuff done. I'll get there tho.

Enjoy the book(s). Wait til you meet the construct in the Griss Twist dump. And the Weaver (and the Ambassador!). Oh hell, and when you find out what Yag actually did to deserve getting his wings stripped! Damn good book! ^_^

On the last paragraph, got all of it except the last bit. Might actually just buy it and sit down till I finish it. Awesome book, really engaging, no idea why I never finished it.

Ach, it is quite hard work - he's quite a dense writer. Miranda has a loan of it just now, but you can have another stab once I get it back, if you want.

hehe - aye, doesn't it just! Hopefully I'll be able to add a wee bit more once I get some sketching time.

Thanks for looking! ^_^

Neat. At first thought that he was pulling the duck apart
Really nice work with the colors and textures.

Hehe - I've had a few friends suggest variations on that. Like I say, I REALLY need to figure out how to do water! Many thanks for the kind comment.

Excellent work, sir!

The detail on the face is great, especially the eyes!

PS
I thought it was a deep-fried duck he was eating at first...

...Which would be beyond awesome!

Ha! I think aromatic duck would be closer ... aroma of stagnant pond ... NIIICE!

Cheers much, chief!

Pretty nice work! I always had a bit of trouble envisioning the vodyanoi, since he says they are frog-like but you get the impression they are not just giant frogs, so your version works well.

Funny thing that - I don't think MiΓ©ville ever actually describes them as being frog-like - he just gives lots of descriptive details so that you get that impression. The only time they're called frogs is derogatory statements from New Quillers & the like.

Many thanks for the comment tho - it means a lot that a fellow fan like my rendition. Cheers!
