Description
During the year 20's Auto-Ordnance made a Thompson 30-06 variant that was intended as a rival to the M1918 BAR. It had an extended receiver with a recoil buffer and fed from 20 round magazines. However I just wonder "This is the closest thing that the US had near to an assault rifle" (before the Sturmgewehr 44) so if the had developed the gun further they would have already had an assault rifle by 1941. Of course this is merely an idea as in practice it wouldn't be practical because of the weight of the gun, but it's an interesting concept.
