Description sta.sh/0ps43hwroli WHY AND HOW DOES THIS STAMP HAVE SO MANY FAVOURITES?!?!?  www.deviantart.com/arthurengin…

Okay, I have seen a lot of people continuously using "They're just characters!" as an excuse for the characters being unlikable.

If you're going to use this quote to explain that the characters aren't real, that's fine. But as an excuse for their unlikability?! Come on!

I think the only people to use this excuse are those who don’t watch TV.

Okay for the character not being real okay but for the character to be unlikable I feel like it gets to the point where it’s overused.

I equally hate that excuse alongside with “it’s just a TV show” just to excuse the media to suck.

This may be one of the silliest excuses I've heard from fandoms to date. These characters are meant to be personable and relatable to the audiences, causing this argument to make little sense.

ArthurEngine In reply to katamariluv [2020-02-28 07:57:56 +0000 UTC]

Yes. You are right! Saying "They're just characters" to justify their negative traits.

But I can only accept this quote when people use it to explain that the characters aren't real.

TecuciztecatlOcelotl [2020-01-17 22:59:06 +0000 UTC]

Also "They're just characters!" is not an excuse to make a character to act OOC or butchering a character arc. If a character driven storyline is butchered for bad writing decisions, "They're just characters!" is not justification.

I really how this excuse is so popular nowadays. Is like they want to give a free pass to hack writers and producers to milk a franchise dry for corporate stupity, or being just a conformist to accept everything from a show or a movie because you're a "fan".

The only acceptable excuse for "they're just characters" is when people use it to explain that they're not real.

I see where you're going with this; What The Simpsons had since Season 8, and what The Family Guy had since Season 4.

Agreed.

And Game of Thrones, Star Wars, etc... Even as a casual, I can see how they dedicated to ruin things that while they were not excellent, they still were good.

I believe season 8 of Simpsons still is a Golden Age season, it was season 9 were the decline started... Season 4 of Family Guy still had some episodes that can be considered classic.

ArthurEngine In reply to TecuciztecatlOcelotl [2020-01-18 01:59:56 +0000 UTC]

Which is why I believe, when I read the fact that The Family Guy was cancelled twice, later episodes, especially one involving incest, and an episode where they stole a YouTube video, proves it should've stayed cancelled the first time.

Upon finding out that rumour that "The Simpsons will end after Season 32", which proved to be false, I was all "Why didn't it die years ago like it was supposed to?"

TecuciztecatlOcelotl In reply to ArthurEngine [2020-01-18 23:02:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I agree about Family Guy. And the abuse to Meg is another reason why I eventually lost interest on the show, it got so annoying... The stolen YouTube video for me is why I don't take that "At least is not as bad as Family Guy" excuse seriously. Compare anything with modern Family Guy is putting the bar WAY too low. So being better than Family Guy is not a merit.

I believe The Simpsons should have ended after season 8 or 9. I read somewhere that Bill Oakley said that season 8 was made to start to wrap-up the show, which explains why that season felt kinda different compared to the previous ones.

I don't blame you there.

Now I'm starting to think that Season 8 would've been great to end the show, for lots of reasons:

1. The Simpsons move to a different location.
2. One member of The Simpson family almost becomes heavyweight champion.
3. One character discovers his illegitimate child.
4. Two characters get divorced.
5. Another member of The Simpson spawn falls in love.
6. One character finds his soul mate.
7. One character "finds an alien".
8. One character stars in The Itchy and Scratchy Show.
9. Lots of characters try to kick a habit.
10. Another two characters fall in love.
11. One character volunteers for the church.
12. Another character dies.
13. One character finally achieves something.

That proves even more that Oakley and Weinstein assumed that the show was coming to its end like Seinfield and made season 8 to start to wrap up the characters when they were showrunners.

People who hates a character uses that term as an excuse whenever other people defend a character he/she likes. For example he said "if you hate (character name) so much that you wish to kill him/her, i teach you a lesson", and then the other people said harshly "you asshole! They're just characters, go fuck yourself loser!" Im tired of those people saying that term.

Some people like characters who are "nice", like Serena from Pokémon. By their logic, Chloe from Fairly OddParents is a good character because she's nice.

benjrom11 In reply to ArthurEngine [2019-12-30 23:00:11 +0000 UTC]

Yes, Chloe is overhated because people says that she is Mary Sue. Also i don't like the term Mary Sue because it has lost its meaning.
