Maglor, taking on the crown and deciding not to rescue Maedhros after his capture. Done for Day 2 of Feanorian Week!

It's just heartbreaking to see the hand that was meant for harp strings ended up on bows and arrows.

They were suspecting another trap. Maedhros was suspecting one too, which is why he decided not to go alone which still ended up in a failure.
I don't think all the fans have a full idea of the cruelty he had to endure. He was a captive for seven years, though I'm not sure how much of that was at the end of that chain... and then his hand was cut off by his friend (not that a bit of extra pain really matters in that point). It proves how tough the Elves can be compared to humans, but I would have expected Maedhros to have gone mad (judging by two more kinslayings, maybe there was some madness). Perhaps Fingon was also half expecting to find a corpse. Let's face it, he came rather late.
Pfft, maybe I should write an essay on the psychological effects on him elsewhere...
I do not hate Maglor though, the debate must have not been easy. Nice picture.

Closer to 35 years, actually, since before the sun rises time was measured in Valian Years, which are equivalent to about 10 years of the sun.
Personally I don't like looking at the kinslayings as an indication of Maedhros's "madness" - I definitely agree that Maedhros was probably in extreme psychological torment after Angband, but I think it's a lot more tragic and interesting if he goes into the kinslayings knowing exactly why he is doing it and why he's forced to and regretting it clearly and bitterly.
You should definitely write more about that somewhere if you have more to say!
And yeah, to be fair to Maglor, he was having to play the role of king now, and had a lot of responsibilities. Charging to Angband would have been a suicide mission - something that was easier for Fingon, not being a king. And obviously trying to treat with Morgoth and meet his demands would be useless. But yeah, that conversation between the brothers must have been Wild.
It's interesting to think about though - even if Maglor did try to rescue Maedhros, would he have succeeded? Personally I don't think that any Feanorian would be in the mood to pray to the valar at this point, and I certainly don't think that Manwe would feel friendly towards him either!
