Galion meets a skeleton mermaid(Mercat! XD) for the first time

Skeleton Mercats are an elusive breed, they live very deep within the coldest oceans and seeing one up close is considered good luck but catching one in a net is considered a bad omen and MUST be released.

They only venture to the surface when the Aurora Borealis hums at the right frequency to call them from the depths. Unlike sirens or some mermaids(non skeletons) they are a peaceful species to land dwellers and extremely curious, which leads them to search any and all ships they find. They do however dislike sirens and mermaids who tend to view them as pets more then equals.

They have extremely good eyesight in the dark, and if they spend enough time near the surface they will develop better daytime eyesight as well. They use their whiskers when the water is too muddy and dirty.

While they will eat anything that won't eat them first(Barring sentient creatures) they generally eat oysters and clams, but their favorite food is pearls. They have been known to cultivate pearls in oyster beds taken care of by family pods, but they still enjoy the thrill of finding one wild.

The young are kept in small underwater caves in the deepest parts or the ocean and few other creatures venture. The entrance will be blocked by a rock in order to keep the curious kits from getting lost in the vast ocean floor. They are only allowed to leave when they are strong enough to move the rock away.

While they have strong family ties they are a solitary species and communicate with each other long distances. But will occasionally form pods (10-30 members depending on the family) when the mood suits them, particular when one has found a large oyster bed that contains pearls, and calls the family pod together to share.

An idea I've been toying with for a while (Skeleton Mermaids for Roverswap)and adopting Aurora was the perfect opportunity
