“Look mom, you’ll meet her, I just need a little time.”

“That’s what you’ve been saying for three months Hideki Sakamoto.” My mother Mei responded. “Are you afraid we won’t like her, or”- I scoffed at that. I had been going out with her for a year, and my mother was mortified when I told her nine months into it (from there she told my father).

“No, it’s not that… she’s just uncomfortable with meeting new people…” She had good reason, to the point that she wouldn’t even allow me to take a picture of her with a camera. “You’ll meet her, and soon I promise.” I hadn’t even told her my girlfriend’s name.

“Alright son… I’ll pass that message onto your father… be careful.” I frowned, “I heard about what’s been going on and.”

“I can handle it fine, don’t worry.”

“I know, sometimes you just drive me crazy… be some to come by the home during your leave, love you son.” Of course she wanted me to come home to Dublith, she didn’t feel like the military could protect me as well as she thought she could.

“You too mom.” I ended the call, dropping the phone back into its socket. I groaned, wiping my brow as I sat there, it took energy to lie to my mother like that.

I needn’t even ask Angela, she’d say no right away… And I didn’t blame her.

As paranoid as my girlfriend was, she had good reason to be.

It was late, thankfully I had R&R leave time beginning tomorrow so I could bother to sleep in, spend more time with Angie.

So it was odd as I walked into the apartment’s living room to find a messy bowl of blonde hair resting on the back of my couch. I smiled a little, eying her from behind.

“I didn’t even hear you come in.” I uttered, “I mean sure I was a little busy but…”

“…”

“Ange?” I asked, getting around the couch to see her sitting there quietly, looking down… amber eyes look red and drained. Her eyes usually seemed more lively, skin brighter, but right now she just seemed different. Something was wrong, I didn’t know what, but it was the truth. “Is something wrong?”

“…” I assumed she might have been in one of her melancholic moods… something I could usually help her with.

“If it is… say so, I can’t help if you say nothing”-

“I want to break up.” She whispered sadly, and I paused, not believing what I just heard. “I don’t want you to blame yourself, but I can’t do this anymore.”

“I don’t understand.” I stepped closer, “We’ve been really good, what changed?” I asked, stepping closer, the Homunculus girl looked away.

“I’m a monster… a freak, and you deserve better than that.” I raised an eyebrow, not believing a word of that.

“Ange…”

“I saw my sister, well who used to be my sister with my ex, and they’re happy… because they’re the same.” She looked down.

“Are you jealous?”

“Of course not. But I abandoned her, to become this… thing.”

“No you didn’t… you told me about how your looking out for her, and”-

“But she needed me there, and that was the one thing I couldn’t do, not like this, now she doesn’t need me… and I can’t go back.” She had mentioned how the man who turned her into this made it dangerous to turn back.

And if she left the Strikers, they would hunt her down and take her philosopher stone… right before killing her.

“I abandoned everyone I knew… and now I need to abandon you.” She looked down. “Don’t try to change my mind Hideki.”

“Why do you feel like now is the best time to end this? After being together for a year, through so much?”

“Better now than when you start getting the idea of starting a family.” I paused. “Having kids or getting married, I can’t do that you know.”

She couldn’t reproduce as a homunculus, and it wasn’t like I could be public with our relationship.

Be public that I was in love with a woman who technically didn’t exist.

“So what? We don’t need that to be happy.” I smiled, “There’s plenty of people who don’t have children, or even marry, I”-

“… I’ll outlive you.” She finally replied, “I’ll outlive you, Kokoro, my mother, everyone… I knew that five years when this happened to me, and only now am I accepting it.”

She was afraid of one day losing me… so she’d rather lose me in a way that I at least had a future.

“Angela”- She stood up, shorter than me but taller than most other girls her ‘perceived’ age.

“Homunculus’s are meant to be alone… and I need to accept that.”

“Well I won’t.” I told her, edging closer. “I won’t accept that.” She frowned, “You don’t deserve that.”

“Don’t be stupid, I’m giving you a way out-“

“I don’t want a way out, I want you.” She paused. “So what if you can’t have children, or grow old… that doesn’t magically change how I feel about you.” Her amber eyes shook. “My whole life I’ve had decisions made for me, who to be friends with, what foods to like… and now I’m here where I’m away from that and I’m choosing what I want to do… and now you want to take that choice away from me.”

“Hideki… we’ll never have a real future together. You’re choosing to be miserable.”

“No I’m not, but you are, with all that talk about being alone.”

“…” My hand grasped her burning cheek, her look grew intense.

“I love you, Angela… and that won’t ever change. So please don’t try to force something you don’t want to do.” She looked away, “And even if what you say is true… than shouldn’t that mean you’d want to enjoy this while it lasts? Whether that be one year or sixty?”

“But what if you die because of me?” A problem she always feared, if Abhik (her homunculi boss) had found out about us.

“Then I’ll die happy… knowing I’ve cherished every second of being with you.” That broke her.

“I…” Her hands fidgeted, and then another tear roll down her right cheek. “I l-love you too.” She huffed, and I stepped closer, wrapping my arms around her as she cried into my shirt. Her hands tugged on my back, shaking… as if she was expecting me to vanish any second now.

“It’s okay… it’s alright.” She had never seemed like an emotional person, like this had been building up for the past five years. It made me thankful I could be around to help her through it. I petted her hair, straightening any foul knots I had felt, massaging the back of her spine the way she liked. I remained at her side for what must have been ten minutes. The tears finally stopped, she started regaining her composure.

“So you’ll stay with me?” She asked, “Even through all that?”

“I’m not going anywhere if you aren’t.” I replied, and she nodded.

“I don’t deserve you.”

“No more of that talk, okay?” I smiled, turning as we slowly got back into our usual groove. “You aren’t… busy with any missions, are you?” She shook her head, “No one would ask if you disappeared for at least a couple days?”

“No.” And I smiled. “Why ask?”

“Just… equivalent exchange, right?” She turned, “I know so much about your life, but not you with mine. I just think it’s time for you to meet someone.” She paused, before sighing, knowing what I was talking about. “Just please say yes, you won’t have anything to worry about”-

“I trust you.” She replied sincerely, confounding me “I owe you that much for putting up with me.” I took it in strides.

“Good… then we leave for Dublith tomorrow.” I stood up and she froze at the sudden concept.

“Tomorrow?”

“Better get all the sleep you can get, hon.” I kissed her on the forehead and returned to my bedroom, which she followed, about to argue.

It took another five minutes but she ultimately gave in, lying down beside me, holding me close, I noted her shakiness.

“You’re not a monster you know.” She looked up to me. “I’m pretty sure monsters don’t cry.” And that made the difference as she finally began to sleep.
