“Do you really have to go?” she asked, as we stood at the train station. “I know technically he out-ranks you, but”-

“It’s not just that, he’s my best friend, remember?” I asked, Kokoro nodded.

“Right, your best friend that never spends time with you… I remember.”

“He’s been going through a rut, I admit.” I relied, “But ever since he started helping that Chun friend of ours, he’s been better.” I turned, “And if he needs my help, and if Colonel Kato allows it, I’ll be there… This Sand Noose Alchemist guy sounds like bad news.” Kokoro was almost jealous by how dedicated I was to him. She was also likely insecure because Saren’s new friend was a girl that we both knew.

And I typically had a bad history with women, something I was getting over when I started going out with Koko.

“I understand that, but with all going on with that wind scythe alchemist.” I sighed.

“And something tells me these might be connected, I don’t know how though.” I turned, “Xingese alchemist takes a philosopher stone, and there’s talk of this other alchemist not needing a circle.” It reminded me of another alchemist I knew. “And both are clear enemies of state… and if I can figure it out, then”-

“You’d do better figuring it out here.”

“I’d do better figuring it out on the field, not behind a desk.” She looked down, “No offense.”

“It’s okay…”

“And besides, they got Shiro and his friend going after them, not like two state alchemists need my help.” I shrugged. She sighed.

“If you think it’s the right call… then I’m all for it.” I turned. “I guess I’m just a little worried because years ago Angie did the same thing… disappearing like this.” And now I knew what was troubling her.

“You know I wouldn’t do that to you.” I told her, “I’m not like her, I”-

“I know, but…” she looked down. More people walked past us, diverting their eyes away because of a stigma against Amestris military. “First my Mom becomes the commander at Briggs, my dad dies… Angie disappears and mom sends me here to work under the Colonel… I can’t lose more people.” She looked down.

“You don’t have anything to worry about, I’ll be fine.” I explain, while she looks down. “I wouldn’t do that to someone I loved.” And then I paused, realizing I had just said I loved her for the first time. She smiled sadly, hugging me from the side, it was something we weren’t allowed to do in public, but she could get away with because our boss didn’t care.

Kokoro was his favorite after all, his star protégé… the only thing keeping her from being promoted (and our other friends) were their age. She was my favorite too.

“I love you too.” She kissed my cheek sweetly and my blush grew direr… a little bit because of the onlookers. Finally the train arrived and she let me go, smiling.

“I’ll call you every day.” I told her, “Be back as soon as I can.”

“I know you will.” She replied waived as I boarded the train, finding my seat and waving towards her as we left the station.

Central City disappeared and I felt worried… like I wouldn’t get to see her for a while.

So maybe it was for the best I said I loved her… it gave me something to look forward to, knowing how much trouble Saren and Naava were
gonna get me into.
