Description Yes the image is dark. That is because space is dark. You may call the image dark, I call it realistic. (as far as a made up ship in front of a made up nebula can be called real)

A friend of mine once said that realism is overrated.

But done right (like yours), justifies the whole attempt!

Good use of colours. My one suggestion would be softer shadows; what light there is is coming from a very diffuse source (the nebula), so the shadows should be very soft. The hard shadow from the nacelle pylon back near the shuttle bay is a bit jarring. Depending on what 3D program you're using, shadow maps or soft (area) ray-traced shadows might work best.

Good stuff, though!

Excellent!

It's partially LW 10's fault and some of mine. The render settings are a lot more sensitive and it delivers much more moody lighting. And I have been trying different settings too. Thanx!

Or something like that.

Very Nice indeed. Into my pic folder she goes. ^_-

yes space is dark yes in space there is no such thing as a fill light but it just looks and feels better that way and its something FX people have used going back all the way to 2001: a space odyssey so its kind of industri standard by now and it is what people want to see.

I agree. Movies would be pretty dull if we couldn't see what was going on.

Theres a lot of ambient light in the scene showing the ships details (ambient light that shouldn't really be present given the zero atmosphere of space) Its a great rendering anyway, makes a change that a nebula in trek is depicted almost as it should be - as a cloud of dark particulate matter (dust) instead of the usual hyper neon type effects normally done.

I did actually think about that, and part of it is "artistic license" but other parts could be wisps of the dust and gas surrounding the ship in a true 3d element. We see it flat.

In any case thanks. I think my abilities have taken another step forward. Comments seem to indicate such!

I like it I have to agree I for one think that the exterior lights would only be used in proximity to other ships and port's etc and be off the rest of the time nice work.

Don't get me wrong, I like an interstellar lightshow as much as the next guy, but most of the Hubble and deep space images we see are all false color to enhance the scientists abilities to identify the component elements. So you can't blame the misconception.

That being said...thanx.
