Ammit (or Ammut, "the Devourer") ~
A soul-eating monster of ancient Egyptian myth, Ammit was a funerary spirit given such epithets as "Devourer of the Dead" and "Eater of Hearts". A composite creature made up of the three most fearsome animals of ancient Egypt: having the forelimbs of a virile young lion (still bearing its youthful spotted pelt), the hindquarters of a hippopotamus, and the vicious jaws of a Nile crocodile. In the Egyptian underworld of Duat, Ammit was said to dwell by the dreaded lake of fire beside the scales of eternal justice. The judges of the dead -- the jackal-headed god Anubis (Anupu), and the ibis-headed Thoth (Djehuty) -- weighed the hearts of the departed against the feather of Ma'at (divine truth/righteousness/etc.); if the hearts failed this test and were heavy with sin, Anubis would cast them aside to be eaten by Ammit in the worst of all fates: the Second Death, in which the souls of the damned would be restless and tormented for all eternity in the stomach of the monster.
