Contest entry for ~kiriOkami
This theme is about extinct animals and that was one thing that made me immediately affected, especially since I have long wanted to contribute something. Thus I came to the competition just right. I think this was the most time-consuming picture I've ever drawn. But it was really worth it. Everything turned out exactly how I imagined it! I'm really proud of myself this time

Everything in this picture has it's meaning but I won't tell you because I want everyone to find it out themselves. Please let me hear your ideas.

Animals from top to button:

- Barbary Lion
- Caspian Tiger
- Zanzibar Leopard
- Taiwan Clouded Leopard

I am always saddened by the thought of big cat extinction, As for what I think, I think the chains represent humans trying to kill them and kill them all, The light is their fear but they stay strong and keep going,

I love the work of this art, I have always loved cats and wolves and I think this is one of the best I have seen, Good job.

As for the background, I think that they are nowhere, but trying to get somewhere, and That they are running from extinction, but they defend themselves so humans want to kill them.

Hey. Now I'm not exactly omniscient when it comes to decoding the hidden meanings of art, but I'll give you a collection of ideas I have for this image, some of which will seem obvious, but I'll give it a go. Firstly, I see the golden chains as a signifier for the harsh reality of life, in which nothing lasts forever. The white light and the chains act as anchors for species as advancement and prosperity is considered redundant for these animals as they try and escape their fate; Extinction. The whole aspect of 'survival of the fittest' comes into play as they struggle to escape their impending doom due to Humanities actions such as poaching. The use of these chains could also seem as a way of expressing that these species are trapped together, and that they are not alone (considering the how ever many thousands of species have been wiped from existence due to a plethora of Man-made issues such as deforestation and preservation of Tertiary, Primary and Secondary consumers within the food chain/web. It's almost as if these predators are blighted with the lack of balance between Predators and Prey. Anyway, that's just my opinion, the point that *Araless is putting across may be completely different, but that's my view on the matter anyhow .

As for the actual artwork, one major part I am drawn to is the expressions on the animals faces; the Caspian Tiger and the Taiwan Clouded Leopard mainly. The feeling that the Caspian Tiger must have is one of struggle or confusion. Whereas the Taiwan Clouded Leopard seems to be bewildered at the situation and the innocence of this particular animal is clearly shown. Finally discussing the Barbary Lion, it appears if he is looking directly at the viewer, possibly portraying that us, as humans, should be to blame for these animal's demise.

In conclusion, I love how the Artist has left it to the viewer to create his/her's own meaning behind the image. Great piece, I really enjoyed thinking about this image.

Well here's my thought out interpretation (probably too thought out).
The light is the opposite of extinction, it is life. The darkness on the other side is extinction. The chains are either growing, showing that they are coming back to drag them towards life's grip, or breaking in some cases, showing they aren't attached to life at all, but are headed towards extinction.

The Barbary lion isn't running towards the dark, but is almost unsure. This may be because it isn't quite extinct, as we found subspecies of the same lion (look it up).
The Caspian tiger is the farthest ahead on the road to extinction, and that animal has been declared extinct the longest.
The Zanzibar leopard is running alongside, knowing where it is headed, as it was declared extinct only a year after the Caspian tiger.
The only animal looking back towards life is the Clouded Leopard. This may be because this exact species may not be extinct after all, as one was spotted in Taiwan.

The only places the chains have broken are on the Tiger and Zanzibar leopard, the only animals completely declared extinct, while the chains on the Lion and Clouded Leopard are perhaps growing longer to recapture them and bring them towards life. There are also more growing chains on the leopard rather than the lion, since it is more likely that that original species still lives, while the Barbary lion doesn't exactly live, just another species with the same genetics.

Alright, I'm done ranting now. I hope this is what you were trying to show!

I get it, the light is extinction the chains are forming showing being held bak, every chain link a new death to the species or every chain link faded is a death.

A very disturbing art work and a sad and harsh reminder of what humankind is actually doing on this planet, or rather, to this planet.    I will not fave this.

It's kinda a PCA, just because it reminds you of something doesn't mean it's not great, the cruelty isn't coming from the artist, as spreading the truth would be by faving this

Such a powerful concept. Good on you for making people stop and think! It's very clever how the strength an length of each chain is different according to each of the big cat's threat to extinction!

This is one of those art works that will definitely stay with me

This picture is incredible. It's a beautiful work of art, with a meaningful and extremely sad message. I have always adored the big cats of our world, and it breaks my heart that we have lost, and are currently losing, some amazing animals.

This piece really further inspires me to continue in my studies of the animal world. I hope to contribute to their conservation one day!

Pure blooded barbary lions don't exist anymore, therefor they are extinct. It is believed that there are some lions in the zoo with barbary lion ancestry but it's not proofed and you couldn't really call them barbary lions anymore. That's at least what I've found out while I was researching this subject.

i found that at least two pure males are still alive and a female was but died in 2007. so they are praticly extinct. we cant make healthy babies from two males just yet. science sure is trying though

I see the white light as a sort of representation for extinction itself, and these animals trying to escape it, but they're caught in it's grasp (the chains) no matter what they do. Looking at the piece over all, I think this should evoke emotions for not just those animals that have already gone extinct, but for all of the animals that still exist in this world today, especially those that are on the verge of disappearing.
That's just my thoughts as I look at this beautiful piece of artwork. No matter how you look at it, I think we can all agree that this is a very powerful piece. Any idea taken from this should definitely leave an impact on all of us who view it.
