Description The winning submission for WolfQuest's [link] art contest, category Marking Territory! Finished!

As today is the last day of Wolf Awareness Week, I thought I'd end it with a painting depicting accurate wolf behavior and physiology.

Wolves mark territory in a variety of ways. Since researchers estimate that wolf olfactory senses could be up to 100 times more sensitive than humans, one of the most effective method of communication is scent marking (the other, if you're curious, is though vocalizations). When marking their territory, wolves will urinate, defecate and leave scratch marks (wolves have scent glands between their toes) around the borders, as well as along crossroads within the territory.

Another effective method is howling. While scent marking tells outside wolves that a pack is currently residing in a territory, howling tells them that the pack is present and healthy.

what would be an example of inaccurate wolf behavior and physiology? and if wolf olfactory senses are not 100 times more sensitive than humans, then what would be the most effective method of communication?

Congratulations on winning the contest! It's cool to see art in the game(especially if it is yours(I didn't know there was a contest, if I did, I probably would have done something and probably lose)). Great job!

Ahh don't say art isn't your thing! You're amazing at it! ='( (and a hundred times better than me x.x)

I don't deny that I'm fantastic at art. I'm amazing, especially given that I don't ever practice. It's just not my thing. Ethology is my thing. Ecology is my thing. Zoology is my thing. Art is just a past time that I don't pay much attention to (hence why I hardly update and/or finish things). It's fun and all, but I'd much rather write home about my advances in science than this.

Nice work. Also: now that I have actually seen a pine forest, Wolfquest makes more sense. As for the foreground grass, I like to use a lighter color and take a fine brush and make a stroke from the top of the blade to the ground. Makes it look shimmery. Practice on paper first, though because you don't want to ruin time-consuming paintings by smearing up the foreground with mistakes! (personal experience? Yes. >>

Hmm, nice colors. Though I'm going to have to say I think I've seen some better stuff done by you (course how can I say otherwise when I keep hearing how much you didnt think this was one of your greater works). Love the wolf in back

Erm, you're welcome to try, but I don't think you can, my dear. Also, I don't think I ever said this was crappy. Bitched about painting it the whole time, but not crappy. My At The Den painting is pretty crappy, but I'm overall pretty proud of this one.

LOL No, not really. I liked this painting from the beginning. So what you actually would have done, were I not made of stronger stuff, is depressed my ego further by telling me that a picture I actually took my time on and was quite proud of wasn't as good as I thought it was.

But really, I've got such a big ego that it hardly matters. Art isn't my thing anyway; I just like dabbling in it.
