"Keely Ryan was hiding in the White Mountains when the bombs hit, as far from civilization as she could get in that little corner of the country. In the midst of the war, Keely had gone and offended the wrong kind of people, and had been advised by those who were more practical than she to get the hell out of Dodge before she ended up at the bottom of the Charles. So she was alone in an isolated valley, in the basement of a tiny cottage on a tiny lake when the bombs dropped. The house collapsed around her but, by sheer dumb luck, she was protected from the crushing weight of the structure by a large support beam stopping just short of crushing her, and creating a filthy little sanctuary in the midst of the destruction."
