i used to draw a lot of dragons like this, back in the day. then i stopped. and for some reason, i decided i didn't have a good excuse for stopping, and doodled this up promptly*. and then scanned it and added the blotchy background in photoshop, to see how it would look, since i'm toying with the idea of doing something similar with the original.
regardless, the original will be for sale at AC this coming june, framed and matted. :3

Really like the design. Did you do it straight with ink?
I think if I were to have it as a piece of purchased artwork, I'd prefer it without the inkwash background. Hard to say though, as you've effectively used neutral enough colors to not make it an eyesore. But I'd personally still prefer a minimalist look without the wash.

i wish i could say that i did... but i actually penciled it in first. i wasn't sure exactly what i was going for, and since i wanted it to be large-scale, i didn't think it a good idea to get far and then go '... oops'
hmm... i see your point. i don't know if i'd be able to get it neutral like this with watercolours. at least... not as neutral, and i'd hate to screw it up after spending so much time on it.

lol, oh, i know. uzumaki = spiral. I FOUND IT FITTING.
also i wiki'ed it and some of the sections in the book are titled something like 'spiral madness' which IS ALSO FITTING.
