Description
Platypus are monotremes, mammals that lay eggs. They share their order with the four species of echidna and are survivors of a very early branching in the mammalian evolutionary tree. Fossils of primitive platypus date back to the Cretaceous Period.

Platypus have 10 sex chromosomes (as opposed to our two) and their Y chromosomes contain genes found in bird sex chromosomes. Their young are called puggles.

Male platypus have a venomous spur on their hind legs, the venom of which can cause excruciating pain to humans and kill smaller animals.

The latin name for the platypus used to be Ornithorhynchus paradoxus due to it's paradoxical anatomy and features. I learnt that from Dot and the Kangaroo when I was little. There was a song. HAHAHA

I challenge you to find an animal cooler than the platypus. They are one of my all time favourite animals, so very very weird. I could write a whole essay on them, but I just put some lesser known facts.

Australian animals are one of the few things that I love about Australia, and monotremes are the most awesome of all Australian animals (though the 3 long beaked echidna species live in New Guinea).
