Originally I was going to base him off of animals that actually eat/damage trees like beavers, woodpeckers, and beetle larvae. This line of thinking eventually lead to lumberjacks, which led to chainsaws. I'd imagine a chainsaw is more effective at cutting down a tree than chewing on it, but it would still take eons due to how big Yggdrasil is. Also his wings have evolved into powerful secondary arms, to easily traverse the endless expanse of roots and branches where he resides.
