I love their intense stares...
I'm not sure how to feel about cats; I mean, I like their independence and low-maintenance lifestyle, because that means little effort on my part. However, they worry me as I fear the occasional spontaneous scratch.
I'm much more familiar with dogs, their habits, their indications of distress, their needs, their grooming, etc. I've never been bitten by a dog, and I know how to avoid it. They're cute, cuddle, warm, and friendly.
Cats are cold and distant, and I can't tell the difference between purring and growling.
But I think I would like cats if I knew them better.
Anyway. That was irrelevant.

Thanks
Well, I've had cats for over 6 years, so I've gotten to know them well. This is what I can say about them:
Cats are definitely very independent animals, besides needing some essentials like food and litter. They are usually very clean.. they don't slobber like dogs, or smell as bad as dogs, and maintain their fur. Cats actually have a natural cleaning solution in their saliva that allows them to clean themselves.
My cats have NEVER hurt me intentionally. I've gotten used to their claws by now, so I don't really ever get scratched. I've found that the best solution is to snip the tips of their claws every once in a while.. to protect the furniture and my hands when I'm playing with them. I believe that fully removing their claws is cruelty.. ;_; When you're playing with a cat of any age, they usually don't bite very hard... or at least hard enough to pierce the skin. Thus, I'm not really afraid to play with any cat, unless they have a very anti-social and aggressive personality when I first meet them.
The best solution, in my opinion, when thinking bout getting a cat is to get them as a kitten. Doing this allows you and the cat to grow up knowing each other. Older cats get set in their ways and may be harder to adapt to you.. not always though.
Cats are very selfish animals (in my opinion). It's a downside that they're not loyal like dogs.. and wouldn't ever think of protecting you. That's the only thing I don't like about cats, but I get over it. My cats are always very demanding... meow at a door when they want it to open.. meow at me when they want a treat... meow when they want me to pet them, etc.
Cats can be very loving too. Whenever I'm sad, my cats tend to be much more cuddly and nice... and my parents tell me that when I'm home, they longingly stare up the steps knowing I'm gone, or act mopey and depressed. I sleep with my cats almost every night, and Moo always cuddles up in my arms.
Each cat has a very distinct personality though. Moo is VERY social, and will love anyone to death that he meets. Luna, on the other hand, doesn't really like a lot of people, and ONLY sits on my lap. xP Sometimes it's almost scary how deep their personalities can be.
Moo and Luna are not siblings though. I originally got Moo with his sister Pumpkin in front of a story called Fred Myers from a guy who was giving kittens away. I had Pumpkin for about three years... but the Coyotes got her one night I could tell Moo was really sad... because he always snuggled with her at night, and later slept in her bed instead of his. So, I went to the pound a few months later and chose Luna over her identical sister. It took at least a full month for Moo to get over being angry at the new kitten.. but eventually he came to love her just like Pumpkin.
When I first brought her home, she immediately became attached to me.. enough that she would whine if I left her alone. So.. I stuck her litter box and food in my bathroom, set up a bed in my bathtub, and slept with her so she wouldn't cry. I woke up to find her cuddled inside my shirt O_o;
Sorry for the long paragraphy, I get carried away with cats xD I hope some of my information helped you.
