Just a little comic! Positivity concerning appearance can seem a little condescending coming from a skinny white girl, but I just wanted to share my perspective haha. My family is awesome, but it's ridden with body dysmorphia and, growing up, I had to constantly listen to the people I love put themselves down. I always sort of went in the opposite direction and liked the way I looked. And yet before I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, I went through this period where it looked like I was developing wrong. I was unnaturally skinny, but my belly was all distended as if I was malnourished because my body wasn't getting the right blood sugar levels that it was supposed to, but I didn't know that. So my ears sort of stuck out too and I remember thinking they were really big. Like, it was this huge insecurity for a long time and I would wear hats, cover them with my hair, just stress out about it way too much. Whenever I told people about it they thought it was really silly. And it was really silly, but when you convince yourself that something is a flaw, you have trouble convincing yourself otherwise. But in order for something to be considered big, you need a comparison. And once I realized I was comparing this so-called flaw to some image of what I should look like that I had made up inside my head, I saw that, even though society reinforced it, I was the one making that image exist. And my love for art helped me really love myself. Of course my little story is nothing compared to what most people go through, but I just thought a little empathy and solidarity would help a tad. What makes you different does not make you flawed (:
