Actually my well-meaning mom would tell me this as a child...I ask how to spell a certain word, she suggests to look it up in the dictionary, but I occasionally let her know that I don't even know what the first few letters are (then she'll tell me). If you already know the beginning syllable letters, but are fuzzy on the rest of the spelling, THEN I can understand why you look it up in the dictionary...

Ah yes, the dictionary, the most useless book in existence as who the flying f*** atchully uses words as they are in the dictionary and it is impossible to use for people who have trouble spelling and need to use spell-check all the time (like me).

My teachers never said this, but my parents did.
Usually I had a good enough grasp to find it, but that's still questionable logic to assume a child will understand.

For me its grammar and pronunciation that are bad. Irl I'm a spelling nazi but I try to refrain from doing so mostly.

I have had this done to me so many times in grade 1-5
Now in middle school the teacher doesn't give a second look about spelling. They're just like "it's the ideas that count, not spelling or grammar"
waste of 6 years :C
