The Night is omnipotent, the Night is omniscient…
For the next few minutes, Lux and I sat around the entrance to the underground chamber, waiting for Scienta to eventually emerge. When Scienta finally did arrive, her eyes were red from her tears, and her chest was covered with her father’s blood. She looked at me in surprise and said, “You’re still here?”
“Why would I not be?” I asked, confused.
“Well, why would you stay?”
As Scienta asked this question, I suddenly realized that I had no real motive. As I thought about it, the only true reason that I was still there was because I felt sorry for Scienta. I felt pity. I felt compassion.
“Because I want to see the Light,” I replied, standing on my hind paws.
“Let’s go see it then,” said Scienta as she turned to Lux. “Are you ready, Lux” she asked, kneeling in front of the boy.
“Ready for what?” inquired the boy innocently.
“When I tell you to, I need you to use your light, understand?” The boy nodded and raised his hands in front of him as Scienta took a step back. In a single, swift motion, Scienta stood on her hind claws, opened up her wings and shouted, “Portal de lucis, porta de scientia, pons cordis, aperi!”
At the exact moment Scienta said “Aperi”, a large pulsating orb materialized directly in front of her. After the cloudy orb had fully materialized, Scienta turned to Lux and said, “Now!”
At the dragoness’ command, Lux closed his eyes and began to produce a ray of light that connected to the levitating orb. Once the light made contact with the orb, the sphere began to brighten and grow larger. When the orb was barely my size, the faint image of a colorful world faded into view, and a sweet scent permeated the air. At that moment, Lux opened his eyes and stopped hi light. For the next few seconds, the boy stood in wonder and amazement at the sight in front of him. I then watched as he instinctively walked forward and vanished into the orb of light.
After seeing Lux enter into the Light, I slowly ambled my way towards the orb, but I was quickly stopped by Scienta who jumped in front of me. “I’ll be the first to go through,” she declared. Scienta then turned around and proceeded to walk towards the orb when a collection claws, fangs, and fur suddenly flashed before me. Before I realized it, Scienta had been tackled to the ground and was wrestling with a massive copper Serran in the form of a wolf.
“Heh, first the father and now the child,” said the Serran as he pinned Scienta beneath him. As the dragoness struggled to free herself, I noticed that the orb of light was beginning to shrink and fade. When I looked back at Scienta, the dragoness’ eyes stared at me with terror and hopelessness.
Without a second thought, I pounced onto the copper wolf and sank my sharp fangs into the back of his neck. Once my teeth began to harrow his flesh, the Serran yelped in pain and tumbled over on his side, causing me to lose my grip and fall off. Before the Serran could retaliate against me, I lunged at him again, aiming for his throat. The instant I bit into the Serran’s airway, I could taste the creature’s blood all over my mouth. It was the taste of the Night.
The Serran then proceeded to wail and thrash about until collapsing to the ground with a large thud. When the beast had fallen, I released my grip and returned to the orb of light. As I approached it, I saw that the portal to the Light had completely vanished, and that Scienta was still in the Night. Before I could say anything to her, she looked at me with thankful eyes and said, “You’re an idiot.” She then stared at the ground and said, “But you’re also a kind one…”
The Night is eternal, the Night is forever…
