I think it's so peaceful around the place where you live, it seems to be a good place to make landscape picture out of it (well, as what I've seen in your gallery) I live in a bustling city so it sometimes envies me, haha

merearthling In reply to Angor-chan [2018-11-25 13:56:11 +0000 UTC]

yes it can be peaceful but also getting busier every year with many visitors looking for the peaceful places   or maybe they just like driving around in camper vans, motor bikes, car clubs, coach-loads of tourists, cars with caravans so in summer the roads are too busy to be safe (being only single track) its same everywhere more populated less peaceful places here is preferable to a large city with no work for me though ...  where it is not easy to walk away from the crowds you have my sympathies Angor dear friend ... its nice to visit a bustling city for me though expensive also you can visit here to walk away from the crowds dear friend

Yeah, I understand that Nick... I sometimes need to walk away from the crowds in a peaceful place, too, and just enjoy the scenery... not many place for contemplating like that here in my city.. moreover, some of the place are not safe here for a woman to walk by herself   I wish your place was not too far from here, I'd like to go there!! haha you know even London is about 17 hours from my city

I am not sure what city Angor  but there are several even many  in that region which can be seen from Skylab's  orbit as orange glows/blobs at night time its  not so bad here if you would like to visit in future I am glad to accommodate for you, there is a bunk under my front window  or also a bunkhouse in the village ... several years ago it was filled with students from Brunei studying Petro-chemical geology at Aberdeen University ... they were completing a final field trip study. yes I think it is more than 17 hours to drive to London from here so to reach here would need  flight onwards into Scotland ... a Scottish airport is preferable, easier and convenient, any airport in Scotland is about 8 hours drive from here for Glasgow/Edinburgh  or three hours for Inverness I could collect from any airport in Scotland but you might like to explore Edinburgh first for example of course I understand that there are many places not safe for women there in a city and that is an unhappy fact across the globe in many cultures I fear that the  'Western cultures of global media, sport and religion may serve to reinforce that unfortunate aspect of life  and the attitudes which go with it.
My father has just bought some land for building a house down on the west coast of Scotland away from crowds which looks interesting a different place to draw and explore ..

Oh.. so you actually live far from the city? That's cool!! I believe it's so calm and peaceful in there!

8 hours drive from Glasgow? I'm speechless... not in a negative way of course isn't there any train from Glasgow to your place?

Well, when I was in London I went to many places on my own, and though I had never been there before, I feel like it's kinda safe for a woman (even with my hijab, which actually I felt like nobody really cares about your fashion in London) to go alone comparred even to some places in Indonesia!   maybe that was what I think about when comparing places.. ahaha (I'm kind of an explorer when it came to traveling... when my friends go shopping I usually went alone and explore for strange, new places )

Hi Angor yes it is sixty miles from here to the nearest railway station in Lairg where I visit the dentist also   but here in summer is very busy with visitors  also I live close to the store, garage, public toilets and village green  with hotel ... so it is not  quiet at all more like a traffic island! it had used to be peaceful but only off season now ... there are places to go for peace and quiet not so far away  yes the drive to Inverness closest airport is about three hours and for Glasgow/Edinburgh around 7/8 hours from here
the last time that I was in London the place was very clean looking and I never felt any sense of unease there at any time ... the native Londoners are most congenial and friendly I found ... depending on circumstances I am not sure what a hijab is but London has been a cosmopolitan city since Roman times and surely used to any sort of garment ... I heard the French were difficult about some attire but thats not London its good that you feel safe there I do as well even walking across the city at night with a female friend she asked to hold my hand but that was  simple thing for safety friendship and reassurance  ... there are places as you say which have more hazards ... South Africa maybe and North Korea definitely lots of north Africa what  had been Libya .. most the Middle East ..Syria ... places a war respondent would visit, Pakistans north west territories.  and other sorts of trouble spots where conflict is common not here though Angor !

I see, yeah, sometimes that would be an issue in many countries... sometimes even in her own neighborhood it could be unsafe for a woman to walk by herself

Hijab is a headdress which muslim woman wear, you can google it and specifically how we indonesian girls wear... you know, I thought a lot of western countries seemed to not accept that but actually it isn't so (so far in London it turned out fine)

Whoa... 3 hours from closest airport? That's kinda tough if you need to go to the airport often, I guess

My city even have its own airport, but only for flight to domestic and south asian countries.

Hi Angor dear friend Happy New year or did I say that sorry to be slow I wanted to see what the Hijab was first so looked as you suggested ... this is what the students from Brunei studying petro-chemical geology were wearing .. light mauve at least some of them, I made friends with one who is called Amal one afternoon when we walked back from a local beach together  but I remember her hair was loose that afternoon ... it was the Sultans birthday and she told me that all people from Brunei had a holiday then
we have a different name for this useful practical head garment it is called a 'wimple' and was extremely popular in Western Europe during  the early middle ages 12th century onwards for all women also earlier in history the Norse peoples wore something same but not sure what name that was ... Juliets nurse in the play 'Romeo and Juliet' would wear a wimple ... now its mostly worn by nuns as a part of their 'habit' but a similar effect can be made with a shawl or two and that is traditional here for centuries as protection from wind and sun rain and dust, essential in a storm ... its common all around the world for this reasons like the mountain peoples of Andes and Himalayas , the eskimo peoples of the Arctic and Siberia ... my friends wear shawls as scarf for the same look one of them like pretending its for a Hindu maiden in a Bollywood film! I think there are many communities  where this is commonplace to see people wearing it 'hijab/wimple and always have been Oh I travelled and worked a lot in earlier years around Europe  and could do again different places but for the moment I like to stay closer to home ... I have to guess that your city is not Jakarta I am not so remote as the islands of Scotland such as the Shetlands where shawls incidentally are an art form in knitting made for christenings and wedding so fine that they can be pulled  through a small Childs finger ring ... like gossamer spider webs  of Shetland wool

Happy New year to you too! Although it's a month ago

Well... I'm based in Bandung, it's about 3 hours train from here to Jakarta and my place is kinda far from the shore of Java. It's cooler here than Jakarta, and you wouldn't find many overpass like in Jakarta... but still it's a bustling city, and it makes you kinda bored and stressed sometimes

I bet your place is a good one to learn about culture of Scotland, it's so cool, I think.

I once read Readers Digest's book about culture of British Isles, so many things in it, I can't remember all at once in a while, and I found out that mermaids are part of Scottish culture and fairies are from Welsh one, is it right? ^^

Haha yeah, it's a mandatory to adult muslim ladies to cover the hair and body except face and hands, so we would wear hijab as our headdress, and we in Indonesia are free to use any color or pattern or style as long as it's covered and not tight. We are also allowed to loose our hair in front of some men, like our fathers, uncles, kids, relatives... The colors and styles of the headdress are part of muslim culture, but the "covering" is a must for muslim women. For example in saudi arabia they only allowed to use black and some of them covers the face except their eyes (or at least what I seen when I went to saudi arabia once). I think the black and face covering also part of the arabian culture...

The nuns also wear the same yes! it's strange how is it same, but also different (if you know what I mean )

Hi Angor   thanks for so much wonderful news! I have submitted three pages about colours for you today maybe you will find them useful next I shall see where Bandung is oh the culture that produces fairy tales with mermaids or selkies as they are called in Scotland is much broader than the British isles maybe its best seen as a Celtic/norse fusion or diaspora a web of stories around Northern Europe ... Russian Fairy tales are very strong also and its best not to forget the Emerald Isle Ireland where all of them have a place ... I have a reprint of a Victorian book called 'The fairy faith in Celtic countries' which is a collection taken from actual people out in the countryside of sightings and encounters around the British Isles ... I see that fairies and suchlike are popular in Japan and Vietnam also really they inhabit the planet prior to our existence I think we just have to tune in to their existence
Strange that an ordinary item of clothing should be an item of compulsion but its so for many I believe if that is good for them is fine strange that they are all Nuns in one sense or another to wear the wimples its no difference to me I just heard from a friend in Bologna  Italy ... she takes in refugees sometimes and the  latest shown in a photograph with her husband wears the total black head covering of a Saudi woman ... maybe a runaway slave ... its possible Saudis endorse slavery

Hi ! I read a story once, I cannot remember anymore was that from Scotland, Ireland, or Wales, it was about a human who loved an elf or some kind of fairy people, and one day her father called that guy and showed him the fairy and her sister and he could recognise her from her sandals! that was a cute story I guess

Yep, in japan there's a story about fox lady, princess Kaguya... not to mention fairy tales from Indonesia, about a lady who was afraid of a prince who force marriage to her, so she went to the moon with her cat, but then try to sew a huge fabric to make a way to the earth because she wanted to meet her family

I have no idea that Saudis endorse slavery nowadays, but all I know their culture is strict for women to have their own rights, I don't really know why, such as in Saudi woman shouldn't drive a car except in emergency, or a woman shouldn't going out of their house without  someone accompany them ... I believe it's not islam because here in indonesia it's not like that

Yup, there's nothing to be worried about what people wear... it's their right to do so

Hi Angor you might like to look at these compilations 'Scottish folk and fairy tales' in penguin books and 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' Scandanavian folk tales .. in Wordsworth books  ... both cheap paperbacks there are good stories in them
it was incorrect of me to single out the Saudis  as slavery is endemic across the globe in all advanced countries where there is money .. people trafficking is a most lucrative business ... my friends refugee in a Burkah could also have been from Sudan or Ethiopia, Eritrea there are slaves in UK and Europe some from North Korea working in Eastern European countries ... for more information best see Amnesty international as for female emancipation the same applies I don't understand what 'not Islam' means as I have more experience with insanity than religion in fact the latter is something I view as a form of insanity ... my experience is that 'life feeds on life' simple equation that works for me maybe Karl Marx was correct when he said that 'religion is the opium of the masses' there are fashions in religions as well as clothes and architecture as in food and arts as in all that we do it seems to be but we only got one life and paradise and this is it being here now like a bird in the tree singing freely

Angor-chan In reply to merearthling [2019-03-08 04:17:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's every people choice to believe in religion or not, it's up to them I think... sorry to brought up something that actually was one of an issue in my country, about women in Islam... it was also related with culture and fashion, here some people kinda mix up between religion and fashion

I see, there's still a lot of countries do unfair things to women... it's so sad not to mention some people/society in my country, for example who still think women who choose to not have a child is inferior

I would like to see books about folks tales from around the world! You know, sometimes you can find similarities from the stories, although the country is far away from the other. I also love the stories of King Arthur's Knights Though some of them are tragic...

no worries Angor it is easy for me to sense the dilemma for you I have no religious indoctrination of any faith at all and not a religious upbringing but was taught courtesy and respect for all religions as a matter of fact it must be difficult to separate so many fashions and factions in them all like the two faiths in islam and more in christian bhuddism hinduism shintoism zoroastaism sufism Hebrew hassidic tudemenical so much discord and strife when fashion meets politics meets religion meets warfare and conflict that my observations lead me to conclude  that this is a form of mental illness that human societies practise .. as Marx noted ' the opium of the masses' so it is of no surprise that intoxications of all sorts are a result ... it is a shame that women have not found and are not likely to find meaningful emancipation in this next century ... but it took the Catholic Church 300 years to recognise that the sun was at the centre of our solar system
I died once in an intensive care unit after losing all the front teeth in a road crash ... paralysed but ventilated my heart stopped and I was conscious to know death ... the experience is one of an infinite eternity of terror .. first there is  recognition of infinite time then this brings also the eternal terror of non existence .. panic in easy terms so I panicked and the heart started again 'life feeds on life' what life I had needed more life to survive and there was just enough adrenalin to make it happen ... if I had to say  then it was the great spirit 'Wakan Tanka' which helped me to live inshallah many names yet nameless panic!

Wow... that was interesting experience, it's some kind of supranatural, perhaps? The most important thing is that you're fine now, I think ^^

Well yes I believe everyone has its right to have their faith, some people in the world just really need a religion because it has writings that shows how to live properly, etc. And all faiths told its people to do good things and bring peace to the world. But that's just important for them and their society, and they don't really have to tell other people that their faith are better than other

Hi Angor thanks again ... no I don't think that in this survival case there is anything supernatural or nothing more unusual than the tenacity of life and a will to exist  ... if it had not been for the ventilating machine aiding the breathing I should have died no doubts about that ... but the spirit of life is truly awesome so for me now life's a prayer and small miracles happen every day regardless of faith I have had supernatural experiences as well but that is part of a mental illness which I  was born with and can often be attributed to lack of sleep for days on end and other incidents in life ... I discovered that it is possible to suspend ones disbelief and believe in anything or system of faith it seems to be hardwired into our species in one form or another

That's so sweet! When I played the game I always ran around as Edgar, so he was the little sprite on screen when Terra's transformation took place. He definitely would have said something like that, too! (My only wish is that the characters would have had more lines...)

Oh, I changed their default names to those of a couple I adore! Even when I played it the second time. I just imagined them saying things to each other during battle. (Since the characters didn't talk in battle, I made up some exchanges myself!) It really is a wonderful game, but none of the characters were as developed as I had hoped. It remains my favourite Final Fantasy anyway, though! The story is phenomenal!
