Description Update: Updated my pixel process + typed the text out (and made the phrasing clearer). Included a couple more screenshots too (:
Hope it helps!
Here is the link to the shortcut for doing a white outline of your pixel in photoshop

As always, feel free to suggest any guides/ tips/ process you'd like to see!

-------

just a simple and quick pixel guide (not so much a tutorial I guess)! if you have any specific questions please feel free to ask ;;
(applicable for both sai and photoshop)
it's how I do it anyway, you can experiment to see what works for ya

i usually shade skin separately for some reason ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
also I accidentally merged the hair layers so it's already shaded in the flats part haha

Some of my pixels!

thanks for viewing! ;;

Your pixel chibis are so good, i've been meaning to commission you for one myself.  Such good stuff!

Aww man thank you! I really enjoy the process of figuring out where to add shading to a small drawing xD

I hope you don't mind me asking but do you have advice for tackling colouring line art? ;w; My line art in pixel art always looks so 'clunky' even though I always avoid overlapping lines and I don't know if this is because I'm colouring them wrong or I'm missing something.

AngelKite In reply to G-0AT [2019-02-28 13:22:56 +0000 UTC]

Your pixel art is really cute!! I love this one
:c: Liirah
I think you could try colouring the inner lineart and leave the outline black?

an example:

(didn't have time to colour everything but it's the idea!)

You can just create a clipping mask over the lineart layer and colour the lines ^^

G-0AT In reply to AngelKite [2019-02-28 13:53:02 +0000 UTC]

I was colouring inner line at some point, but for these big ones I stopped and I think it was because they were bigger but things on a smaller canvas, even with coloured lines I thought they looked too crowded or 'clunky', I don't have examples because anything icon size, I can't do ^^' Uff, I wish I had quickly tried to do something now to show you what I mean aha;;
Like colouring wise, I can't do something this size;   (sorry, I grabbed examples from your gallery), you can see the details and it looks neat and tidy, nothing looks look crowded and I often thought it was because of how you choose the colour, where you put it etc.. If that makes sense aha. I'm absolutely terrible at explaining myself qwq;
Don't worry about it if you don't get what I mean, it's fine and thank you for your help anyway and I thought I'd just add that your pixel art is so pretty!!

Hmm I think without an example of yours it would be hard to give more specific advice ;; no rush though, anytime you're free! (:

Maybe this could help? For small pixels it's all about simplicity! You add the shading minimally, leaving clear spaces where the base colour is!
For example with the cape fur, I shaded it the way I normally do with my normal non-pixel art, but because I don't soft-shade for pixel art, I just use one colour to add lines, and a lighter shade to add in at the edges.

If you ever do an example you need advice for, feel free to ask ^^

This is really useful! ;O; It sort of is what I was looking to learn and when I get time I might give it a try out! If it's okay, when I do finally get around to it, would it be okay if I show it to you and see what you think?
(Thank you so, SO much by the way, I'm very grateful for your advice and taking your time to explain things to me!! >< )

Soooooo I actually favorited this AGES ago, but recently felt the desire to try art again.

Got any tips for someone talentless af? And I mean talentless. I can't sketch worth a DAMN(too many lines, I get lost) and even stuff I work on for HOURS looks like something a person doodled in 5 seconds TT_TT

AngelKite In reply to Dazed-Haze [2018-11-19 00:48:30 +0000 UTC]

oh man don't call yourself that! it's just a matter of honing a skill ^^
I mean, just look at my early pixelling ahaha

It really depends on what you're trying to draw! if it's a pixel chibi bust, I'd recommend looking at some chibi proportion guides
or even just amass a bunch of chibi pictures you like and observe how they are drawn then try to apply them to your own art

Nobody starts out being able to draw; it's a pretty long process!
to start with, learning basic anatomy/proportions and colour choices is the easiest
(after which the more complex stuff comes in which isn't too important now if you're still a beginner ;; )

For example, when drawing a chibi, knowing anatomical proportions still helps!
- mouth is aligned to the jaw
- eyes are usually in the middle of the head (for chibis; for normal heads it's in the middle of the head's circle)
- hands reach sightly above mid-thigh

feel free to ask if you have more specific questions and I can try to give more specific advice ^^

Dazed-Haze In reply to AngelKite [2018-11-19 01:26:01 +0000 UTC]

Lunerre is cute! And I don't mean talentless in a bad way, just...realistic.

Var  <-- This was my first attempt at pixel art without using a base(still used a tutorial for the eyes). The best I could do without sketching was draw and redraw lines while referencing a thumbnail as I went along. It's...bad. Hence the use of the word 'talentless'.

Thank you for the helpful tips! Most people just tell me to find tutorials and leave it at that so I really appreciate the notes on Jaws, eyes, and hands (not being sarcastic, in case it sounds like I am)

art is 99% hard work! so don't worry, it will improve with time (:

I could do a redline for you if you like? but only if you want it! ovo

That would actually be really awesome! But if you don't want to/don't have time then no worries

How come you cannot soft shade pixel art?

AngelKite In reply to Piponyo [2018-02-28 12:24:49 +0000 UTC]

you can if you want! this is how I do it haha xD

generally the pros also recommend not soft shading! cause pixels should look crisp. sorry I'm out now so I can't link other people's pixel guides xD
