Description I promised myself to venture into backgrounds this year, and here's the first one!

I really dunno how people paint little details
maybe I need to expand the types of brushes I use )':

I imagined one of my OCs in this setting haha /o/

Thanks for viewing!~

Work big, then go small.

So... yeah you're on the right track with the lighting and composition, just like make your big stuff first, then work into the details.

Start out big and basic, with shapes, forms, etc.  Lighting... then zoom in for details.  Not sure what program you're using but you can also try to find some free brushes or make your own.

this is such an old piece! xD

when do you mean by 'big stuff'? and if you do BGs, what canvas size do you normally use?
I'm gonna try and attempt a background piece this month, it seems so daunting.

Well like 3000x6000pxl  for example.  Then block in your shapes so like you want to put in your trees, hills, background, foreground, mid ground stuff.

This is a good tutorial to explain what I mean.  The foreground stuff is gonna be bigger than the background, and you can do stuff with lighting to add drama to the composition.  Also layers.  Like try to keep each area on a diff layer and then each object or feature on a layer to allow you to work and change/adjust.

oh wow! that's a great image and those are awesome tips.
I hope you don't mind one more question - do you think all landscapes/background scenery have a focal point?

for example, I'm hoping to do an alleyway scene for my next picture, and I came across this:
img14.deviantart.net/9777/i/20…
there doesn't seem to be a focal point ;;

appreciate the tips!! (:

Usually they do, it's called "composition".  Even if the "focal point" isn't a "thing" when you look at a painting there will be a "vanishing point" of some sort. It gives the painting a 3d feel.  When we look outside at stuff, our eyes have a natural focal point of 20' (just to give you a clue), and this enables our brain to place things in 3D space.

It's there, just follow the line of the street stones, and the angle of the buildings.  It's done in what appears to be one point perspective. The vanishing point is just hidden by the buildings.

Here is a good tutorial that explains what I mean better.

It's a nice BG, like something out of a fantasy movie/game/etc.
