Description Watercolor
Usually I first work on a background and only after that I paint the main character. This time I started with the lynx. And as for me was already a finished painting before i painted sky and fir branches. But unfortunately there is no "UNDO" button in real life, but it still looks nice.
Please share your thoughts: what do you work on first. How many sketches does it take to find what you're looking for

Amazing I feel like the scan(or photo) doesn't do the original piece justice.

Thank you so much! I try as best as I can to take a decent picture every time, but yes, making a digital version is a challenge i haven't won yet

I usually surf the internet and gather up lots of different ref photos. Then I figure out which ones I am going to use.. I usually end up using 3-6 refs, some for color, some for shading, etc.
I make a pencil sketch of the character then do lineart with a pen and erase the pencil behind, then go over it with whatever medium I am using.
I almost always do the background last, which probably is a bad thing...

But whatever you did here it looks absolutely amazing! I love the intense stare of the lynx and details on the rock! People like you really inspire me to do watercolor more.

And umm.. Sorry for the really long comment..:0

Thank you so much for your answer
Yeah, a nice ref picture - is almost always the key! And sometimes to find nice references takes as mush time as painting process itself. And what I ve learned Β - it s not something I should try to save time onΒ Β
the thing about watercolor is that there is no way back and you gotta figure out everything before you take a brush in your hand - and this is something I m still bad at))
thank you for your warm words! If you enjoy my art you will probably love Morten Solberg's art. google him! in fact he inspired me to start learning watercolor))

Yes so true! I will spend days finding references and only hours drawing!

I looked him up and wow! He inspires me as well!
Now I want to paint

I really love this painting!
The subtle colors on the background work well with the lynx, even if the colors are largely similar. And I love the fir branches!
I usually work on everithing at once not letting some parts of the painting to fall behind, this helps to maintain integrity.

Magnificent work! You are very skilled with watercolours!
I usually start on the background first, like you, but I think sometimes it's good to switch it up!

thank you! often so called "skills" is something more about right materials I thought I was hopeless before I took a sheet of professional wc paper. It's pricey but it's totally worth it))

Well, I first draw sketch of the character, then I choose from wheΕ•e will go light for shading and then I start coloring the characteer. After that I decide on the background. This lynx looks so awesome!!

I guess it's the very best way to do things. and I try to work in this direction too...but It seems like it just doesn't work for me this way %)

Your art still looks better than mine! Doesn't matter on the direction, just draw as you want
