Oh, excellent composition with an emotional punch. Is this an effect of layering? I'm still trying to figure this stuff out! Thanks Angel!!!!!!!!

It is! I am too, for sure It's actually an effect of playing with the layer modes. I assign each one a different mode, play with the opacity, and play with the ordering of the layers. There's a thousand combinations, depending on how many layers you're using, and can be infinite. I find the different interactions fascinating.

Thank you, Valerie!

Ah, GIMP. A lot of people seem to really like it. You're doing GREAT with it.

Well, being free and open source is a big plus LOL My husband uses both Gimp and Photoshop, and says in most regards, Gimp is a more powerful program. It has it's quirks, though, for sure. I've been using it for 20 years, but always just to paint.

Thank you again!

20 years??????? OMG. I bow in your presence, I am but a mere grasshopper

I tried to get GIMP for MAC awhile ago and couldn't find it offered. I'll have to take another look.

(You're welcome!!!)

LOL Yeah, I started with it in my late teens, just painting though. I'm just now learning what it can do, so I feel very much a beginner! lol I'm not sure, but used to be gimp.org listed the places you could download it. Been years though!

How cool. This medium (is digital art considered a medium? I guess so!)  is so flexible, you could spend a lifetime learning. Like any other art form, each artist carves out there own signature from this digital clay.

I couldn't agree more... and since it is 'technological' it changes more as we go than other more static forms, like painting and drawing. Always something new on the horizon.

I think it totally deserves to be called a 'medium.'!  I love it. Growing up poor, and as a grown up (me?!? ) preferring to put 'extra' money into horses, digital opened a whole world for me that I'd have not had otherwise. The oil colored pencils I grew up using were a constant expense that often couldn't be met, not to mention paper/board etc. Most people have a computer at their disposal these days, and yes, you can spend as much on digital painting as you'd like. But Gimp made it possible for me to begin my explorations.

Thank you, Jon. It happened on a very subconscious level, and quickly. My manips up to this point are usually under construction up to a week; this one took about 3 hours.

I like this a lot... especially the use of red. I'm afraid we're going to lose forever these wonderful animals, with their rich emotional lives.
