Description The jury's still out on the Ghost in the Shell live-action movie. But the visuals and design work look pretty cool with some nice nods to a bunch of the series. Here's a Robot Geisha graphic I whipped up based on the teaser trailer!

Why do they keep making them uglier in each new retread of that story? It makes no sense in-universe.

The original Tomliand robots from the manga were believable: they were attractive and apparently were able to simulate emotions. They looked like something that would sell like hotcakes.
Then came the Hadali models in Oshii's version, which would only appeal to pedophiles with a fetish for creepy dolls (but then again everyone in Oshii's films looks like a creepy doll).
And now there's this.
Who the fuck, even in a weirdass dystopian world like GitS, would pay for a sexbot that looks like this? Why the hell would an evil corporation go through the trouble of kidnapping little girls to copy their personalities into those robots (whoops, spoilers) if these robots are physically unable to express emotions?
Even the Operators would make better sex toys than this.

At least we get nice fanart out of this new design.Β

Actually, the 2017 film is not intended to be a live-action remake of the 1995 anime film. It's intended to be a new adaptation of the manga though the trailer did show scenes influenced by the 1995 anime film, its sequel Innocence and Stand Alone Complex, the latter two had robotic geishas attacking people.

I never said it was a remake of the 1995 film.

I said those designs were even worse than Oshii's redesigns (the Hadali sexbots) of the Tomliand sexbots from the manga.Β

Unless those new geishas aren't actually sexbots. Then they're okay I guess. Pointless but okay.

And it certainly doesn't LOOK like the manga.
If they had tried adapting the manga, the first thing they would have done would have been to put attractive women in it.Β
It really looks more like a mash-up of the two Oshii movies, with vague references to things that were in SAC or the manga.

I actually don't mind the design but I understand where you coming from. For example, some MMPR fans didn't like the suits revealed for the Lionsgate film.

Well yeah I'm not a big fan of GITS, but that new movie just looks like a mess that went through shitloads of rewrites and shifts in the art direction, until only a few thematic elements and very specific scenes were left and blandened in a clumsy attempt to appeal to fans without understanding what makes those elements cool in the first place.Β
And to be fair, almost everything in the GITS franchise is a mess that only takes a few elements from earlier iterations (hence why I'm not a big fan) but at least there's usually more to it than "we gotta bank on that IP's success with nerds but we don't know what makes them tick so we're gonna copy-paste little isolated bits of everything and fill the gaps with the Hollywood soft reboot sludge".Β

When you think about it, GITS is a terrible choice of a franchise to adapt, because it's so full of heterogenous elements and stylistic variations that it's impossible to not fuck something up, because someone who likes the manga might hate SAC and someone who likes Arise might hate the animated movies etc... for completely different reasons.
So the only people who will really like the end product are those who only really care about the basic premise: "it's the future, there's cyborgs, there's espionage and some action" and not so much about the way it's executed.

Well, GitS was more popular outside Japan as the 1995 anime film is considered to be a classic and was among the first breakout anime titles to garner critical attention outside of the pre-existing otaku community but I respect your opinion on the franchise.

Senfgas In reply to AdrenalineRush1996 [2016-11-17 06:40:34 +0000 UTC]

Probably because unlike Japanese audiences, US/Euro audiences weren't already used to that style of animated movie, so they had nothing similar to compare it to, and it ended up with this "classic" reputation because nobody had seen anything like it outside of otaku circles and Jap audiences.

So it's kind of an illegitimate reputation, and making a hollywood movie based on that alone is bound to be risky as fuck.Β

AdrenalineRush1996 In reply to Senfgas [2016-11-17 06:42:18 +0000 UTC]

It is going to be a risk after all as previous Hollywood manga-to-film adaptations haven't done well with either critics or audiences.

The only Hollywood manga-to-film adaptations I can recall were Edge of Tomorrow (which was pretty successful and acclaimed) and Priest, which had nothing to do with the manwha aside from the look of the landscapes.

AdrenalineRush1996 In reply to Senfgas [2016-11-17 11:43:17 +0000 UTC]

With the exception of Edge of Tomorrow, the Hollywood manga-to-film adaptations haven't done well critically or commercially areΒ Dragonball Evolution andΒ the American remake of the Korean film adaptation of Oldboy. In fact, the Japanese live-action film adaptation of Attack on Titan was not well-received, while film adaptations of Death Note and Rurouni Kenshin were. It's not just manga-to-film adaptations that haven't yet broke through the critical barrier, but also video game films.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Senfgas In reply to AdrenalineRush1996 [2016-11-17 12:33:39 +0000 UTC]

Oh boy, I had forgotten about Dragon Ball Evolution.
At least that one was so awful it was kind of funny.Β

One thing that may have contributed to Oshii's success among western critics is that he tends to rip off Tarkovsky's shot composition and visual gimmicks.Β
I don't think the people who worked on the GitS adaptation even considered that. But nevertheless it probably won't fail commercially. There are plenty of lenient GITS fanboys and teenagers who think Scarjo isn't ugly in the face, so it can't fail.

But yeah, about video games, they just don't lend themselves very well to the kind of movies a mainstream critic would value. I'm not saying anime and comic book movies are oscar-bait material, but they usually have more raw narrative material than video games do (in spite of their length), and a complete shot composition to work with. So it's already hard to pick a video game franchise that has a strong story, it's even harder to translate it efficiently into a cinematographic format.Β

I think it's more of an influence than a rip-off on Tarkovsky's visual aspect. Well, Warcraft was well recieved by fans though not by critics obviously and look, if you don't like GitS, then maybe move on from this subject because this is going too far and I'd rather want to move on as well.
