This has been edited in photoshop and has had a curves added to give the colour that you see, the background wall was actually Brown.
I normally create black and white images in a 4 step process:
1. Using levels - reduce the range of the picture (compress the picture by making black gray and white less white)
2. Use Curves to reduce Green and Blue and increase red
3. use colour mixer to convert to B&W (60/20/20)
4. Use levels to give a full range picture (un-compress)
This is trying to mimic the old 50's B&W Hollywood pictures as the glass negatives were less sensitive to Green and Blue and were usually pulled (I think thats the correct term) when developed
I was doing the above and noticed if I play with the settings (remove the B&W) I can get some really unusual results...
Maybe I should do a tutorial sometime and share the knowledge
