Today marks 100 years since Universal released The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) silent movie.
It was the first full-length movie to adapt Victor Hugo's famous novel. But there was a adaptation of it before in 1911, but it was a short film.

I watched it a week ago, and it was just "okay" for me. But the characters were really good, especially Lon Chaney. The sign that he is was the Man of a Thousand Faces is true. He even played Erik in The Phantom of the Opera (1925), and he did well there as well.
Well, this movie has become a great classic among the other Universal Classic Monsters movies.

Fun fact: Before The Mummy reboot was released in 2017, Universal wanted to launch a franchise similar to the MCU with this film. And the franchise's name was Dark Universe. Actually, they should have started the franchise with Dracula Untold, but it had a mixed performance. Among many classic monster reboots was The Hunchback of Notre Dame reboot. But after The Mummy was a critical and financial disappointment, Universal canceled plans for the franchise, so The Hunchback of Notre Dame reboot was canceled as well.

But if Universal will do the reboot as a standalone movie, it would still be good. But Universal has a problem: A remake of the 1996 The Hunchback of Notre Dame is under development at Disney, which I'm really looking forward to, just don't have almost everyone else be different colored.
And if Universal will do the reboot and releases it the same year as Disney the remake, it will be something like in 2022 when two Pinocchio adaptations released from Disney and Netflix.

Returning to the 1923 movie: A very good adaptation. And it's lucky that, unlike so many Lon Chaney movie, it has survived to this day. I mean, it has not been lost over the years.
