Description 14x17" sketch on Bristol paper.
I want to use this as the base for a watercolor/colored pencil piece, so I'm asking for critique on this before I start the color. Constructive comments are much appreciated.

From my view, u nailed it, there shouldn't be any holes visible on that instrument.

He looks gorgeous, his beauty almost overshadows the insane amount of detail in the rest of the image.

How beautiful!
I adore Cernunnos. For one, I can never stop saying his name, but the forest god he is proves more than fascinating for me.
And how gentle, how calm he looks here. The colors truly accentuate the utter peace of the scene.

That's a fantastic drawing and I really love all the details. The only thing that wouldn't work in RL is the balance of the flute. It would be extremely hard to move on fingers swiftly and still keep the instrument from tilting over to the other side, especially with all those birds sitting on it and that kind of holding device creating even more counter-weight.

(Sorry to be so annoyingly specific, I do play the flute a little and the hardest thing about it is to hold a rather heavy instrument while quickly moving one's fingers.)

But then, this probably is a magic being that ignores the laws of physics.

Anyway, sorry for rambling, again, the drawing is wonderful.

Wow, this is such an amazing piece of art! It really jumps out to me. It's wonderfully detailed. I always wish I could get details like these into my drawings. Can you give me any advice? How long have you been into drawing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

andrea-koupal In reply to Kinsara [2009-08-07 00:33:27 +0000 UTC]

Aw thank you! ^_^ The best advice I can give you as far as detailing is to work large enough. This is 14" by 17" and you can see I used the entire surface area of the paper. Larger drawings mean more room for detail.

As far as how long I've been drawing, basically my entire life, but the more helpful answer would be for me to tell you it's not age that matters but how often you practice. It's a good routine to draw every day if you can.

Kinsara In reply to andrea-koupal [2009-08-07 00:36:19 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou so much for your advice!

You said this is 14" by 17", do you use a scanner to put it on your computer, or do you use a camera? My scanner isn't very big, but I will definitely take your advice and go big!

And thanks for the advice on practice I draw every day as much as I can, so hopefully I will get better.

andrea-koupal In reply to Kinsara [2009-08-07 01:30:31 +0000 UTC]

I scanned it in pieces and used Photoshop to put the whole image together. If you put each scan on its own layer and blend them together using layer masks, and Adjust>Levels to fix the contrast so it all looks the same, it will look like it was done in one pass. And you're welcome!

I'm assuming you've already colored this magnificent image and are done and gone, but since you asked for a little critique, I assume a little suggestion would be beneficial for future use. This image has such wonderful line quality and an array of tones. I love it. The only thing I see even a hint of improvement on would be thinning out the lines of the animals in background? This would give a little more oomf towards the 3D side of the image, since as of now the animals in the background have the same line weight as the foremost character. He's so awesome..he reminds me of a crazy old forest god..kind of like the one in Princess Mononoke. Woo! ^_^ Your drawings are so amazing!

Hi, thank you for taking the time to suggest that ^^ This picture actually ended up being pencil-shaded (the colored version was traced onto a new sheet of bristol paper). I think it should be in my gallery too somewhere.

I like the character design too, I should revisit him sometime

Woow!It's great your work!*___*
It perfectly represents who is, in my opinion, Cernunnos: the King of Woodland, the Creator, the Active and Creative God. I really don't know how to expess this complex concept in a better way... I hope I've done it quite well...

Congratulation!^__^

I remember as a child walking through an ancient wood with my late father. It was a very misty morning, just after dawn, we were gathering mushrooms. He stopped and pointed out a Roe deer stag.
This has that exact samefeel of muted, yet gorgeous colour, sanctity, sacredness and wonder.
Thankyou for sharing this piece of art with us.

It's AWSOME! BUT

The hand facing away from us is off. The first segments of thje fingers that we'er seeing apear to be longer than teh distance between teh first knuckle and wrist. Put it this way, the legth of the entire middle finger is equal to the length of the palm (even a little shorter) but in your image her/his first finger segments are already that long, and it looks ackward. I would suggest erasing some of the "fingerage" and adding some hand.

The composition is really nice but I wish there was something different about the bottom o fteh picture. There seems to be a wonderfull heavy eyeflow until you get to where the robe just falls off of the picture.

very wonderful drawing, I can't wait to see what kind of painting you'll produce!

i love it. i think you shouldn't put color in it. the tone of the whole picture is all natural colors and very soft. in my mind Cernunnos would be more masculine but when i saw your drawing it seemed to work well. personally i would have put more emphasis on the face and the flute. the animals seem to take away from the focus of his face. wonderful work

This is so beautiful, and I will never know how you can call these big beautifully detailed pencil drawings "sketches."

I can think of nothing you could do to make it better. The composition is nice. I love of the little animals around him, especially that python on his arm.

I look forward to seeing this completed when you decide to move forward with it.

Nicely done. I'd only suggest more (or just darker) color in the main character (foreground) to draw the eye directly to him. As is, he is equal with the background, and blends in.

YEAH Cernunnos... Much more impressive than Pan.
Of coarse you can look into Hren too as a good drawing subject.

LOVE IT. LEAVE EXACTLY THE WAY IT IS.
the soft colors really work well with it.

This is a beautiful image! I love the character, the way you did his hands and face, the clothes, the pattern on the snake - everything! It's just so wonderfully sketched. The colors look quite nice as is, though I'd be interested in seeing how it turns out if you add more color to it. Fantastic job on it!
