how did you get all the little textures and backgrounds and colors variances?
was it just a soft brush with a low flow, different colors, and smudges?

This is a fantastic tutorial, There are many different kinds of nebulae but I've always been fond of the 'sharp-edged' kind like this here. And You didn't need any custom brushes either so it's a very practical one aswell.
