I think what made this scene work was the thought that everyone had when the camera set up the situation. First, denial, because no sane person would proceed with that course of action. And then I remember egging him on in my mind to jump in (just to see what would happen).
And I like the scratchy comic book-esque font you used. It adds a sense of urgency to the picture.

I found some wierd trivia about this sequence- the pile he jumped into was made of a mixture of peanut butter and chocolate.

That almost made me barf. It was gross but strangely funny at the same time.

Seriously, the boy is the most the ambitious being i've ever seen in my life....he even have the guts to walk in through the crowd with crap all over him for an autograph....mehn!!!

I remember when he crawled out of the pit, all I could think was- "the brown doesn't look dark enough" (yes, it was some strange artistic coloration issue that crossed my mind more than anything else).
Still, this scene was meant as an example of how far Jamal would go to achieve a goal. If you watch carefully after Amitabh signs his picture, you can see a look on Salim's face that almost seems to say, 'why you little-!'
