As you placed this into the NoMercy folder that means you want a brutally honest Critique from #thephotographyunion

I wish there was something for me to work off of in the artist statement. Something like "I love the paintings of Mark Rothko and have been trying to produce the elegant simplicity of his implied sky/horizon/earth landscapes". Not having that, I have to say it's dead. Everything balances everything else. Nothing is lush or radiant to make it stand out and make the photo dynamic in any way. You need something more to make so minimal a photo interesting..

Thank you for the critique. This is only my second submission so far to the No Mercy folder and I apologize for not including an artist's statement; I guess it just didn't occur to me. I understand that it makes it more difficult on the person giving the critique when the artist hasn't specified exactly what they were trying to accomplish with the image, thus there are really no specific parameters on which to judge the work and I should have known to include this info. Basically I was just trying to construct a landscape here based on the rule of thirds. I tried to place the tops of the mountains 2/3 up the frame (incidentally putting the horizontal of the lake smack dab in the middle) as well as have the two nearer ones occupy the outside thirds of the frame. I do agree with you though, the image is balanced so much, and the scene so simple, that nothing really grabs the eye. Again, thanks for the honest critique, I haven't had one like that since college

Really happy to be of use. The rule of thirds is intended to unbalance the composition but create a solid dynamic organization within the frame. If there were not sky in the picture and you showed two thirds water one third mountains, you would have a better example of that rule.
