Man I'm so envious, I spent years to refine my skills to the best and never stopped working to improve my art, learnt concept art, production lines, all the graphic roles for videogames from 3D modeling to animation, created profiles on any kind of sites, worked in indie game development, and tried pixelart and illustrations too, I publish everyday, I answer all comments and messages, I offer commissions at ridiculous prices... and I've got something like 30 followers, can't gain others, and in the past 3 years I've earnt 45$ and spent hundreds. I really wish I could be successful as you are, I'll keep working more and more and we'll see if things improve... I hope I haven't just picked the wrong job.

I recommend trying to start creating a lot of fan art stuff from a popular franchise(s).
I believe curently this is the best shortcut to gain popularity, followers and by that potential customers

I think you're right, my problem is that I'm doing stuff that would interest a game development studio - not a private. Privates, in my experience, like nice illustrations and are willing to follow and share them, maybe even supporting you on Patreon. But what they will buy, commission and support are only two things: fanart and porn (possibly these two things together). I feel quite frustrated because at best I like soft erotica and I don't enjoy fanart at all, but hey, again, you're totally correct. Also, one cannot expect people to follow and buy if you're not creating what they want!

Well, the thing is you are trying to appeal to the demands of the niche. I believe number of people in game dev business you are aiming to please is much, much smaller than the number of people that expect fanart and other types of fanservice. At least on this site.
You can always try to go 50/50. Hide your pride in the pocket and try to split your drawing/modeling/animating time between projects that are interesting to you and help you improve your skills and other stuff that appeals to people that may end up following you (like fanart you say you quite don't enjoy).
This way you can continue on improving in the fields that you find interesting and also gain recognition for your content. Who knows, maybe you will also learn something else with this experience

I agree with you completely, in fact, I have thought about these things for some time now. As a freelancer artist I knew I would have ended up doing few different things - game art being only the more "professional" and highly-rewarded part. I've spent the day looking at different stuff I did in the past years that quite caught public's interest and yep, I think I can find compromises between what I like to do and what people want.
After all, with all the work I've put in art, not only skill but also speed improves, so I can think I can split my day into different parts to work on different things.
I suppose I can make and publish one concept art piece every day, then I can easily make some tasty yiff (definitely not something that takes much time lol) for commissions and easy money and lastly, I can work on some personal stuff more public-friendly. I had thought about webcomics for years and I've got few interesting ideas, but I've always been a bit scared by that kind of job - I suppose it's time to simply do it.
So, in the end, I would end up with material for a professional portfolio for game studios (a good source of money, especially until I don't have a Patreon and paying followers yet, and I also really like the job); lewd stuff that will make people ask for commissions; and illustrations/comics that will build a fanbase and will lead to a (hopefully) life-paying Patreon. At this point in my life I'm not even considering art-unrelated jobs anymore, that would make no sense, I've way too far.

Ziemniax has some solid advice and I'd recommend the same. I'd also suggest possibly focusing your skill set more. Being well-rounded is really good, but if you've only been creating for 3 years that might be stretching yourself thin. Possibly focus on getting good at one particular thing first.
And yes, just have patience. I've been drawing for 14 years, and the last 5 of that I've taken it the most seriously. It sounds like you already have a good work ethic, so just stick with it, and you'll get there.

I think you're absolutely right, in fact, for the last three years I went crazy for most of the time because I knew I liked art - but I liked SO MANY different things and I just couldn't settle down on a single one without getting bored immediately. Also, it was super frustrating to see people getting a name and starting to make money with really little effort - of course I'm pleased when I see artists succeed, but I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong.
After all this time I really think I'm starting to understand what the heck I should do. It's funny that sometimes it's harder to know what to do rather than effectively doing something. Well, as you said, I'll have patience and work the best I can!
