Oh, don't worry, you're not the only one who didn't know! This happens during Act of Mercy in Act 1, when you tell Thrask you'll help the mages. Whoever the active second is (in the party selection screen, whoever you add to your party first) will smile at Hawke. I've had Anders and Isabela both do this, and I've heard tell that Fenris will do it as well. I'm only assuming that Aveline, Carver/Bethany, Merrill, and Varric do it, too.
