Rae acts as a magical shield of sorts, protecting fainn from the impurities of Earth.  If it is removed, then their magic essence is corrupted and they become a human.  No magic, no ears, no rae.

Technically if a fainn were to shave their rae in the Long Wild, where there are no impurities, they would be fine and it would regrow.
