Description Mono basin is really an amazingly beautiful place. A lake surrounded by blackend volcanic formations on 3 sides and a wall of Mountain on the the 4th. The lake itself is has been being drained for 50 some odd years and as the water levels have dropped bizarre alien spires have risen above it's suface. Definately a place I need to go back too.

What a capture of an extraordinary location. Mono Lake is so beautiful. I like the way the wooden path draws the viewer into the picture.

I think you've nailed why this is one of my more popular photos, I've never quite understood it given the quality ( clarity ) isn't that great. But ya it does have that "you are in the photo" effect. Thanks for making that apperant.

This is overall an amazing shot. Normally I don't like anything man-made in landscape shots, but I really like the wooden planks here. It's also well-placed in the left third, and the mountain in the right third. The person in the distance is a neat touch-- their silhouette contrasts with the bright grass. The only improvement I would suggest would be to clone out that little sign. The bigger ones near the person are OK... but the closer one on the left is a little distracting. Great capture though!

i've slowly come to like man made stuff in nature photos. not because i like man made stuff in nature but because it takes away the illusion. it's kind of a subtle stab at at both environmentalists and casual tourists, ( i of course am party to both ). thank you for the suggestions... and the fav

A beautiful place indeed a veritable wonderland. I barely scratched the surface, and is many ways did it an injustice but that is what us photographers do! Thank you! I made a quick stop by you gallery... will spend some more time there a bit later as for the moment I must be off.

the colours and composition are amazing - you have a real talent.
did you tweak that in PS or is it raw ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

altjeringa In reply to one-bg [2004-12-07 03:06:13 +0000 UTC]

it's tweeked. the coloring comes from saturation and contrast adjustments during import from the RAW file. and I darkened the sky and mountains with the burn tool. Thank you!!

I like the perspective here leading up to the mountain, very nice. I do feel the mountains seem a bit too dark in comparision with the foreground, kind of gives the image an unbalanced feel, I don't know how else to describe it. But overall a good scene

altjeringa In reply to welder [2004-12-07 03:09:44 +0000 UTC]

I agree about the mountains. I actually burned them a bit to darken them up as they were a bit hazy... if i'd have been thinking I'd l have been working with the channels a bit instead. Don't know what I was thinking. May go back and tweek that in the next day or two.

i put Elton John on your brain? ahh somebody shot me before i do it to somebody else!!!!!!! well i suppose when one is having a dialectic tea party one can only be responsible for one half or less of what is in the pot.

ya that's somebody walking to the information kiosk. And that's my car between the kiosk and the walking guy.

when one goes to mono lake they are supposed to come back and post photos of the tufa... ah well i may get arround to that.

its beautiful and i love the complemetary colors in the sky and the grass. it reminds me of one of my favorite places. its up in sacramento, ca at clear lake oaks because the grass looks just like that and theres this single wooden path through the fields. excellent photo.
