Description I recently pulled out Final Fantasy IX again and let me say that I always thought it was a great game, but now that I've matured a bit, I can appreciate its world even more!
What a fantastic game! And those moogles are just cuddly!

Soooooo amazingly cute!

Final Fantasy IX was always a really hard game for me to play, lol. I never did finish it because I got stuck at one part.... I was always eager to find out how it ended....

Simple and clean, nice moogle.

I think the main difference is that in the old games there was indeed more room to fantasize about how characters looked and sounded.

Modern rpg's like the ones bioware is making leave more room to fantasize about how your character reacts to situations. And offer less linear gameplay and sories than the old ones (though still not as free as people like molyneux would like you to believe).

And new technologies give creators the tools to visualize their idea's instead of pointing in the direction and leaving the rest up to the imaginiation of the player.
Depending on the creativity and taste of both the creator and the player the new or old way can both have their merits.

Really? I find that my patience with the old formula has grown thin. Talking to countless NPCs that have nothing to say, random encounters every 5 seconds...it used to be much better as a kid. Kinda sad.

But I suppose you're talking about the universe design, right?

Indeed the universe design. But the thing I like the most is the lack of voice-acting and the graphics.
I like the fast that I have to imagine the voices of the characters. It allows me to use my imagination to complete the characters to my own liking, thus feeling more related to them.

I find recent games hard to relate to because everything is so perfect. It leaves almost no room for imagination and thus becomes boring.
And the random encounters are not too bad now that I purely play for relaxation (ie. 1 hour a day tops!)

Oh, I have to disagree on that one . Voice acting makes my experience that much more vivid. Sure, I can imagine the voices, but actually having them is better (if the voice-actors are good, of course).

And games from BioWare? Mass Effect, Dragon Age? They leave much to imagine about, I think.

I suppose an hour would be bearable. I just recall spending hours on random encounters, trying to find a save point, and then hearingL "Dinner!"

FUUUUUUU--
